My rule of thumb is if I have no interest in communicating with the person in real life, I see no reason to be FB friends. I've deleted people who request me but never contact me after the request.

I have to know the person or known the person at some point in my life. Not someone who is a friend of a friend. However I do have some extended family on FB that I don't remember meeting but they are friends with my whole family so I'd feel funny declining. I don't generally friend request people on FB, but I accept most requests.

90% are people I know IRL, there are a few I have never met but have been friended from some FB groups I'm in. One woman though is a Shakeology coach and I think its on her agenda to sell me her products since she messages me about them every now and then.

I'm passive and rarely will be the one to initiate the request. If someone wants to be my friend on fb, they know how to reach me.
There are people I'm fb friends with who I'm not actually friendly with..... Like old classmates and former coworkers. I just enjoy staying up on their lives, seeing their families grow, that sorta thing.
