Special Area Teachers, come on in!
I am always looking to connect with other special area teachers. We're a unique breed
I am the head of the music dept. for my school, which basically translates to, I teach everythign music related. I have one teacher under me who teaches early childhood music, but I teach general music, chorus, music history, theory, band and recorder. I LOVE teaching music and I have built my music program from the ground. We're still a work in progress, but in the times I've been at my school, I have managed to make or music program into something well-respected, instead of a class that teachers just dump their kids in so they can head off to a break in the teacher's lounge. I organize and facilitate all aspects of music for our school. I put together a huge holiday concert in December that involves the entire school grades K-8, I am the musical director for our spring musical (which is mandatory for all students grades 5-8), I play all the music for our open houses, I have a winter and spring band concert, a spring recorder concert, a spring chorus concert, plus I take my older kids to the Veteran's home to play their instruments and sing for the veterans. I organize NYSSMA for my school, I set kids up with private lessons and run an extra-curricular program for kids interested in furthering their participation in music.
It is my personal goal to make sure my students make connections between music and all other subjects in school. Without those connections, parents won't take the arts as seriously as they should. I believe music enhances the learning experience, but also enables the learning process.
So, that's what I'm all about. I love my job more than I could possibly put into words!

I'm a French and Spanish teacher - would you consider that a Special Area?
