what can I take for a really bad cold?
I woke up this morning feeling aweful!!! I knew it was coming because my throat strated hurting yesterday and it was killing while I was trying to sleep. I don't know if it's just a cold, or maybe tonsilitis- because they're pretty red and swollen back there. I put a call in to my Dr.s office, but noone has called back yet. Do you know if there are any OTC medications I can safely take? I really feel like cr@p and I have to go to work later.

The only OTC medicine I was allowed to take was Sudafed and plain old Robatussin. I don't think that will help your throat. Get some Honey Lemon throat drops, maybe they will help.

I would call the doctor because everyone recommends something different. When I was sick, they told me I was allowed to take tylenol cold. Not sure if that would help with your throat though. Feel better.

I was given the OK for sudafed and robitussin..but ones with NO alcohol in then. Regular sudafed caplets really helped me, on top of cough drops to help the sore throat and extra strength tylenol. I hated taking all that medicine, but my doc assured me it wouldn't hurt the baby. Feel better!!!!!

Re: what can I take for a really bad cold?
I would try to wait until your doctor calls back, or one of the nurses should be able to help you. I was told, I could have Sudafed, Tynelol, Claritin. But I haven't taken any. I would play it safe and wait for the doctor.
I was too afraid to take anything, I didn't take anything when I got sick, but that was my decision to do so.

me too...
very early on (just when i found out i was preggo) i had a really bad cold that lasted 2 weeks. i just suffered through it and knocked down a temperature with tylenol. i also did need to take my asthma inhaler here and there so i could breathe (but double checked with my dr. to make sure the one i had was okay).
now that i am further along, i would feel more comfortable taking something, but would just ask my dr. what she recommends...

Re: what can I take for a really bad cold?
i agree, i would wait for the doctor just to be on the safe side. but when i had a really bad cold and i was pregnant, i just drank lots and lots of hot decaf tea with honey and lemon and took tylenol. it really did the trick. i was shocked. someone had suggested it to me.

Re: what can I take for a really bad cold?
I would definitely wait for a call back from your doctor. But, when I was sick...my doc told me that I could take tylenol cold and robitossin (sp?). When that didn't work, she gave me a prescription for a z-pak, because I was REALLY sick...that did the trick. Feel better

I had the flu when I was 8 weeks, I was told I could take Children's Dimeatapp, tylenol, vicks vapo rub and drink tons of water.
Feel better.
ETA: the doc said to stay home from and try to rest as much as possible.

Re: what can I take for a really bad cold?
I went through a terrible cold @ the beg. of my preg. I stuck to the otc things approved by my ob and then finally went to my Primary Care Dr.
Well...turns out I was on the verge on pneumonia...There are certain perscription drugs you can take in preg! So- if you think its an infection rather than a cold... PLEASE see your PCP
