Baptism gift (long)
I am godmother for my sil's dd who was just born three weeks ago. I went with her to pick out and buy her dress, socks, and bib this weekend (she already has shoes and a hat) and I bought a gown preservation bag with padded hanger. NOW, when my dh was sil's godfather for her first daughter we bought a gown preservation bag, pic frame, bond, and cross for her bedroom. my mil bought a platinum necklace and cross for her to wear for her communion. TODAY, mind you the baptism is on this sunday...I was told that I should be buying the cross and necklace for her to wear. Thank god I have off friday!!!
thanks for the vent...now I need some suggestions to buy a child's platinum cross and chain, not too expensive!!!

Wait a minute --- she told you that you SHOULD be buying it or someone else suggested it?
My sister is Emily's godmother and I don't expect her to buy a THING! If she wants to, great, but I don't think she should be obligated to do anything. Whatever she sees fit is fine with us, and we are the parents and will do the rest.

Re: Baptism gift (long)
You paid for the dress and are "expected" to buy the outfit too?
Honestly, in our family no one is expected to buy anything. My SIL and BIL (his godmother and godfather) did buy my son a cross but I had no idea til the Christening Day and if they had not done that, then he wouldn't have worn one!
Why does it have to be platinum? Oh I am so confused! LOL

Re: Baptism gift (long)
I guess it "has" to be platinum because my dh's goddaughter (the older sib) received one from her godmother, so they want the two girls to have the same gifts. I just feel like this is getting out of control in terms of cost...oh, I forgot to mention my sil is MY son's godmother, but his baptism isn't until june and when asked about jewelry, I said it was unnecessary.

I would do white gold. Platinum will cost you a fortune! I bought my Godson his outfit and cross but it should not be "expected" of you. I would go to the nearest flea market to get it.

Re: Baptism gift (long)
Just a heads up. I went to buy a white gold shoe for Mother's Day and it was twice the price I paid for last year. Apparently, gold is at his highest ever. So you may want to get the white gold because the platinum is going to cost a fortune.

Who told you, YOU should be buying the cross/necklace? Your SIL? MIL? DH?
Even though you are the godmother, this is DH's family, I'd make him call his mother and discuss this. After all, she bought grand-daughter #1 the gift, not you. Why should you be put on the spot and bullyed? IMHO I would do nothing more for niece #2 than I did for niece #1. Sorry if I sound p'oed but people taking advantage of your goodness just got my blood boiling, probably my raging hormones .

Thanks...I think I might offer to buy it for her communion, when she'll actually be able to WEAR it...

Platinium?! Yikes! I think that's a good idea, but I still think your MIL should buy it for her since she bought the one for Madison.

Re: Baptism gift (long)
Hayley's godmother bought her dress and gave her diamond earings. Her godfather bought her the cross. That is how we do it in my family ...godmother=dresss...godfather=cross.

This is generally what we do in our family. We didn't need a gown since we were using my husband's christening gown. I say "generally" because when asked by my children's godparents, I said to get whatever they wanted.
Very rude.
