My first "charlie horse"
So my hubby finds it amazing that I had NEVER gotten a charlie horse
He's very over-dramatic and exaggerates anything, so anytime he's gotten one, Im like "oh get over it, you'll be fine!"
Well a few days ago, we were laying in bed with the kids, and I STRETCHED my legs out, and all of a sudden My calf FROZE it felt like someone YANKED the muscle and froze it all at once, it was THE weirdest and most helpless feeling EVERRRR. I was like OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW WHAT DO I DO WHAT DO I DO ????? and my husband was like "hah see ?? dont move, it will go away, theres nothing you can do"
So the next day it felt sore, then like 2 days later, I was getting a pedicure and the lady attempted to massage my calf and it was STILL sore and achy! and now it looks like my veins a little swollen there, it BETTER not be a varicose vein, I'll die !
What the hecks with these charlie horses? Does all this sound normal ?? Sheesh, I can handle a few c-sections, but this has wigged me out

Re: My first "charlie horse"
I never got one in my life, but during my pregnancy I got one. It just hit me like a ton of bricks! Woke me up out of my sleep! I was like Owwwwwwwwwwwwww!
They to stand up when that happens. I just straigtened my leg out. It was sore afterwards but by the end of the day the soreness was gone.

Re: My first "charlie horse"
I used to wake up in the middle of the night with them! There was nothing I could do and I just had to wait for it to subside.

Re: My first "charlie horse"
I got them at night when I was pregnant too. What really helped was to flex my foot - if you catch it in the beginning, this stops it.

Re: My first "charlie horse"
My dad used to run marathons and would get them - he says you have to stand up RIGHT AWAY when you get them.
I've gotten a few and standing up right away gets rid of them quickly.

I've gotten a black and blue from a charlie horse - you've burst a blood vessel or two from the muscle spasm/cramp - it will go away. . .
I found this online - hope it helps!
Calf cramps or "Charlie horse" in the back of the lower leg is a very common accompaniment of pregnancy. They most often occur between 2 AM and 5 AM and are caused by spasm in the gastrocnemius muscle. Some experts feel this may be related to slightly reduced blood flow if you sleep on your back later in pregnancy, but this is extremely controversial. You may wish to try different sleeping positions until you find a comfortable one.
Experts have recommended everything from magnesium, to calcium, to chromium, to various vitamins and trace elements to try and prevent the cramping. Controlled studies however have found only one thing to be extremely effective in pregnancy. Pre-stretching the calves immediately before bed and everytime you get up to urinate during the night was shown to be more effective than calcium, magnesium or placebo.
Simply stand flat footed about two and a half or three feet from the wall, leaning against the wall with both arms straight out. Then do a "push-up" against the wall, holding the "down" or close position as long as you can or for the count of ten. You should be able to feel the stretch in your calves if you keep your feet flat on the floor.
. . . and I would talk to your doctor if you have more questions.

My boss once told me to stand on a cold floor. My bedroom floor is wood and it worked everytime. It went right away.

Re: My first "charlie horse"
Thanks ladies! I'll read the info! I was going to cry if varicose veins were becoming part of my life! My mom and grandma have (grandma had) flawless legs and skin, not a hair on them (can you imagine?? and talk about tangents ) so at least having not have had one grey hair now at age 31, I was hoping that I wasnt going to pay for it with a varicose vein, yuck, I wont even say the word again
Sorry for my A.D.D. tangents
