Update - they picked up the bird Have you ever reported a dead bird?

DH found a dead blue jay in our yard this morning Chat Icon

We called the # to report it, but they are telling us that we have to keep in a bag on ice in a cooler. And we have to call back on Monday - cause no one works over the weekend. Chat Icon

Why do I have to keep it here? Chat Icon

-- They came today to pick up the bird, we will know within a week if it was infected or not. Chat Icon Chat Icon That it is not Chat Icon

Cause of west nile - it is supposed to be reported if you find a dead crow or a blue jay

Re: Have you ever reported a dead bird?

We did a few years ago when it was all over the news and stuff- they told us to throw it out because there were too many being reported and they weren't taking them all.

Re: Update - they picked up the bird Have you ever reported a dead bird?

Not a bird, but we have reported a dead racoon. Last summer we were at my parents house on LI and heard a squealing type of noise from outside at like 4am. DH looked out the window and said there were racoons in the street. So I look out and there are 3 racoons and 1 of them is lying in the street, closer to the curb, and it's on it's side, squealing and it can't get up. The other racoons just kept standing there not sure what to do. They eventually left - but the one lying in the street died. I was so sad. The next morning we called animal control I believe and they came and picked it up.

What do they expect people to do, pick up a possibly infected bird and put it in thier freezer?? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yeah right! Chat Icon

An elderly man across the street from me died of west nile a few years ago, but noone really gets sick from it. Nobody else in my neighborhood got sick. I did not know the man that well, but I think he was in his late 70's and was full of other health problems. I have yet to see even one west nile case and I work in a hospital.
