Advice needed - gift-related

A good friend of DH's and his wife just had a baby. This is the friend's first child. Wife has a 7-year-old from previous marriage.

I bought a card and told DH to get something -- a gift card, bond (he says no), check, or something. What would you give in this situation? Should we send a gift instead? We have no idea what they have already, $ is not a problem for them at all, and I really don't know the mom, have only met her twice (one time being at my wedding).

Suggestions anyone?? TIA...

Oh and they live in Jersey so I have no clue about what stores are close by...I thought maybe a Baby Gap GC? What amount??

Re: Advice needed - gift-related

I always order the newborn gift set from babygap and have it delivered to them... that way, they get a nice gift, but if they don't like it, they can always return it and get something else

Baby Gap is always good. Also bond, money is good. My sister foudn this thing where you can buy a share of stock in the baby's name and it is framed and mailed to the parents which is pretty cute.

Did you check on their registry at Buy Buy Baby or Babies R Us? Maybe a small gift from one of those? Or if those are too personal and they still have a lot of items left on the registries, maybe a GC to one of those places.

I would probably send a gift certificate to Toys R US - you know those are everyone and at some point or another soon - they will be visiting it for toys!

edited to say : Probably in the amount of 50 - 100 dollars - of course depending on how good of friends they are.
