Oh, goodness yes. My very first interview for a teaching job (Baldwin schools) I was asked "Why should we choose you over the other 200 people who applied?"

Um...my boobs are real?

I didn't know what to say and I felt like such a moron!!!

Re: Did you ever just TANK an interview?

Ok this wasn't me but it was the single funniest interview story I've ever heard.

Going back 10+ years ago when we wore skirts to interviews... My friend from college was interviewing at a company on LI. She had a great interview. Shook hands turned to walk out & her slip fell completely down around her ankles. There is no way the interviewer didn' t see it.

She stepped out of her slip and turned around and said "I'll just take this with me. Thanks again for your time." The next day when they called her for the job, the manager said "We were so impressed that you could handle your 'interview' with such class and grace, we had to hire you."Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Actually, no. I seem to be very good at bullshitting and reading people on what they want to hear.

OMG - did you really say that? Chat Icon Chat Icon

One funny story I heard about an interview was from my brother's friend. He was interviewing for his first job out of college. It went pretty well and then near the end, the interviewer said, "well, if we invite you back for a second interview, what would we learn about you that we don't know already?" The guy paused to think and then said, "well, I guess you would realize that I only own one suit...."

Re: Did you ever just TANK an interview?

This didn't happen to me, it was a guy who interviewed with my boss--

My boss was interviewing for a computer programming position. This guy MADE UP a programming language and called it "XYC", and listed it among his skills on his resume.

So during the interview my boss was interested in this language since he had never heard of it. The guy was sort of hemming and hawing when asked about it, so my boss asked him to write a little sample code on the whiteboard. Finally he went to google this language, and the guy caved in and confessed it was made up. He was practically in tears he was so embarrassed.

Re: Did you ever just TANK an interview?

I have interviewed people and thought -is this person for real--and only hired someone b/c they used some 'buzz words'.....sometimes the pickins are slim.

on the otherhand, I have felt I tanked on an interview a few times. Some of the questions asked are soooo unnecessary if you ask me. 'Where do I want to be in 5 years'...actually I want to still be employeed, working etc...but you can't say that!!

How do you handle yourself under pressure? is another question. And I think, what kind of pressure, a 9/11 pressure, or pressure that there is a deadline, I sometimes want to get a bit snippy when some questions are asked...i think the interviewer makes a big difference in the outcome of the mtg.
