Can you vacation with a baby...
I know this may sound like a silly question...
We are not going anywhere this summer because of the baby. He'll be born at the end of may so I know we can't do anything major. But we are already thinking about doing something next year and are looking forward to having our first family vacation. But some people have told me to wait until the baby is older so he can remember it. I understand that logic of them remembering a vacation but why do we have to wait?
One of my girlfriends went to Florida and on a cruise to Bermuda before their baby turned 1. She told me not let a baby stop you from going on a vacation. True that her baby won't remember but he did enjoy himself...LOL She said he loved the beach! She said that it's a little hard cuz you have to bring so much stuff but you do what you gotta do.
What do you ladies think?

Re: Can you vacation with a baby...
My neice is 7 months old. She has already been to Aruba, Aspen, Ohio and she is now in California and going to Miami in a few weeks. My sister even made the trip to California alone. You can definitely travel with a baby!!
We have a wedding in California in Sept. and I am due in May and we are brining her. We are even hoping to go abroad to visit family before I end my 3 month maternity leave- if the pediatrician says it OK. My friend went to Hawaii with her 18 month old. YOu can definitely travel with a baby!

Re: Can you vacation with a baby...
You can definately take a baby on vacation. You could even go this summer. They are very easy to take around when they are so small. We didn't because Sarah was born during cold and flu season and I was paranoid about her getting sick, but when she was 5 months old we flew to Florida to see DH's family for a few days and then drove to Georgia to see my Dad for a few days and flew home. The only hard part was the flight, she was inconsolable during our descent on the first flight. She slept in the pack n play just like she did in her crib at home (ILs and my dad each got one so we didn't have to bring that along) and feeding was easy too. ILs got a high chair, but at my dad's one of us would hold her on our lap and the other would feed her.

SIL tol dme that she gave her kids a pacifier during takeoff and landing or maybe a bottle. The sucking helps the ear popping

Yup, but they were short flights and she didn't want another bottle and she never took to pacifiers. I think it was more stressful for me, most people were really tolerant since there were mostly families on board, one guy was annoyed and kept shooting us looks until his seatmate reminded him how scary it must be for a baby to not understand why their ears hurt or how to relieve it.

Re: Can you vacation with a baby...
We want to go on a cruise next year in like Feb. The baby will be about 9 months old.
I mean one of my friends was like "save the cruise for when they are older and can remember it especially since some of the cruises have camps for kids" It's true but who is to say that this would be the only cruise that he would be going on?
Not to change my own subject but are the waters choppy during February? That's what DH's BIL told us last night...

Re: Can you vacation with a baby...
I am scared of flying right now, ever since 9/11 happened. But I would be willing to conquer my fear to take my son to disneyland. I will not deprive him of that! Besides I will be so occupied with him that I won't even think about my fear, the key thing is for my mind to be occupied. I should be able to handle a short flight to Orlando...
How are the feedings handled. Say if it's by bottle???

Re: Can you vacation with a baby...
I don't know about the water in Feb.
I'd go on the cruise. There are plenty of things from my childhood that I don't remember, but my parents have pictures of it for me.

The feedings on the plane I guess you mean? On the way down I had prepackaged 4oz. packets of powdered formula and used bottled water to make the bottles as I needed. On the way back we had a few 8 oz cans of RTF formula left from what my dad picked up, so we used those on the plane. I waited for cereal until we were at our destination.

Re: Can you vacation with a baby...
I was thinking of doing something like going to a resort in upstate NY this summer cuz DH's sister, husband, niece and Mother are going but then I thought since everything is going to be so new to us that it's best we don't go away anywhere. Let us get used to parenthood first...LOL

Re: Can you vacation with a baby...
I say to definitely vacation with the baby!!! We take about 2 -3 trips a year and I dont see that changing for us, maybe the destinations will change lol but we will definitely still go away with the baby! As far as the water in feb., that is the ONLY time of year that I will cruise and have never had rough water, however, we leave from miami. I would not leave from NY, the water is always more rough out of NY.

Re: Can you vacation with a baby...
My mom just booked a vacation for our whole family to Montauk in August. The baby will only be 2 months old. I say go for it if you feel comfortable. My friend's sister took her 4 month old baby backpacking across Europe for three months!

I would go for the vacation with DH's family but I would have to see how adjusted I am to motherhood by August...LOL

Oh please, my mother, grandmother and aunts will be up my rear-end from the second I push the kid out, so I think vacationing with them will just be a change of scenery

We took John to Vegas at 4.5 months old and are taking him on a caribbean cruise in July when he will be 16 months. I totally agree with your friend, he will have lots of photos and video to look at when he gets older

Re: Can you vacation with a baby...
if you leave from florida, the seas are usually fine during both feb. & april. however, i think they are even better if you leave from puerto rico. better chance of avoiding a storm. hurricane season doesn't begin until the summer.

Re: Can you vacation with a baby...
I think it totally depends on the temperment of your baby. Some babies are very easy going, mine is not and she becomes even more challenging when outside of her usual routine. So, my concern isn't whether or not the baby will remember, but instead whether or not you would actually have the opportunity to relax.
So my recommendation would be to wait and see what your baby is like.

Definately travel! It can be rough during the flight depending on baby's mood, but overall we have had no issues. Jack has been to NY (we live inOH), Flordia 2 x and Texas and he is 15 months.

Taking a flight and then getting on a boat. It may be too much for a baby. We'll see...
I definitely want to do something next year....
