question regarding really red area down below!!!

Hello so it looks like there is almost a layer of skin missing form my babies bottom.. my sil thinks it was the vaseline and the rubbing of the diaper.. it is soooooooooooooooooooo red.. i changed to a softer wipe and using desitin when needed..
Did anyone else have a problem w/ rashes etc??? Dr, as usual says its normal but it does not look normal.. and the vaseline we were told by the hospital to us it so we kept doing it.. its definately the rubbing of the diaper but just concerned..
What has anyone done if this has happened to them???

Yes, this just happened to Jared. I swear his little butt was so raw. I kept putting Balmex/Desitin on it and powder and finally it went away. I think he also got the rash from teething. Sometimes a good soak in the tub can help too.

Can you try letting her go diaper free at all during the day. Like if she's awake can you lay her down on a blanket with burp cloths under her bum? Airing out will help this clear up.

I don't see how the vaseline could have caused it. I'd think that vaseline would reduce friction from the diaper. (I also used vaseline for 9 months...)

You may want to switch to just using water instead of a commercial wipe to see if that helps as well.

Sometimes what causes diaper rash is when her skin is not totally dry before you put on the cream. We were told to make sure his skin is absolutely dry before we put anything (cream or diaper) on him. We also found that what worked best is Boudreaux's Butt Paste - cleared his rash up in one day.

Destin actually causes Molly to get a very severe reaction.
I would stick with Aquaphor..that stuff is AMAZING.
Put a very thick coating on with every diaper change.
I would cut out all wipes and use wash clothes with very little senstive baby wash on them. Try to give the baby a bit of "no diaper" time to air out the effected areas. My doctor used to tell me to use Triple Paste..you can ask the pharmastic..it is usually behind the counter. That also worked really well. I love Butt Paste but it is hard to find.

Molly never really had bad diaper rash except for once at 12 weeks old or so. And the Destin made her scream and her whole area got SUPER red and raw. Well last week she was SOO raw..I couldn't figure it out. Turns out someone at Daycare put Destin on her because she had a little redness one day. I can't tell you how her "area" looked.she was crying and could barely walk. Aquaphor, butt paste and wash clothes helped her heal in 3 days.Chat Icon

We bought the giant size (16 oz I think) Butt Paste at Buy Buy Baby. It lasts a long time!

Re: question regarding really red area down below!!!

Emily had serious problems with diaper rash.

A few things helped CONSIDERABLY:

Airing her out -- I'd take the diaper off and make sure I had a waterproof pad under her and took the new diaper and actually used it as a fan for like 5 minutes trying to expose the area to air.

Just washcloths -- the dr recommended NOT using wipes but instead just baby wash cloths with warm water and a little baby soap if needed

And when it got really bad we used NYSTATIN cream which the doctor prescribed. They can tell if its necessary --- basically it is an infection if they need the nystatic and even to me when it looked like it wasn't yet it always helped a lot.

This is what worked for us. Alex is 2 1/2 wks old and last week his butt was bright red and raw. I was ready to bring him to the ped to check it out. We stopped the wipes, used warm wet washcloths with a tiny bit of J&J Head to Toe wash, made sure it was totally dry afterward, and then applied Aquaphor. It was GONE in 3 days.
