I don't know of one that I'd recommend. There was a professional society for event management, but I never bothered to sign up.

I would also recommend checking out craigslist. I'm not sure what type of events you're looking to plan - the range could be from convetion planning, party planning, meeting planning.

I just wrote a long response but wasn't logged in. Chat Icon

Anyway, I worked in event planning for two different organizations--one large gov. agency, and then a Wall Street firm. I would narrow down what area you want--corporate? Weddings? Hotels/restaurants? I sent my resume into a company HR dept., and then they hired me for the event planning position they never posted because I had a high-profile previous job in event planning. The categories are very different--I personally wouldn't want hotel/restaurant or wedding planning because I wouldn't want weekend work, which is a lot of what they do. In the company where I worked, I very rarely worked weekends, only for large conferences or events. It was mostly luncheons and dinners. If you are thinking of wedding or personal event planning, I would try to get a part time job as an assistant to test it out. Plus, if you get contacts in hotels and restaurants it will be easier to get into that aspect.

Re: event planning...

Depending on what types of events you're looking for - I managed events for non-profits for a while - and there are associations related to that type of event.

Re: event planning...

felice,

do they hire stage managers for event planning gigs? I know for some things they do. Do you have info on this?
