How do you go about this-- do you need to take the doors off??

We are having something custom built and are planning to paint ourselves-- and are just trying to figure out how to handle this with the installation-- do we have it done in two parts-- where we paint everything- then put the doors on, or can we just paint it with the doors on..

On all the DIY shows they take them off.. Scary that that is my knowledge of these things.. Chat Icon

I would think you would have to remove the doors.

Yes, you should take the doors off. It actually makes the painting much easier and you are sure to get a thorough coat of paint on the cabinets. You also need to take them off to ensure proper drying of the paint. You wouldn't want one of the doors to stick, even when opened, and then pull some of the paint off with it.

Also you probably want to use some kind of satin varnish over it and make sure EVERYTHING is fully dry before you re-attach the doors.

yup remove doors and all hardware and aint them a few times, we also primed them first. They took a few coats and we were doorless on our cabinets for at least 1 week!! Good luck!

I have to admit, I painted over my cabinets without taking the doors off. You should always take the doors and hardware off. I just took the handles off because we are gutting the kitchen in 6 months and I couldnt get them clean, 30yrs of dirt wont come off, so I primed then painted so at least they would be clean.
