How to return a gift??? Awkward situation!!!
My in-laws got me peridot and diamond earrings. They are pretty, but not my style. My MIL showed them to DH before Christmas and he sort of hinted that they weren't my style. I made a big deal yesterday of telling my MIL how pretty they were, because I didn't want her to feel bad - but I know I won't wear them.
They look pretty expensive and I'm sure she'd rather me get something I'd wear, but I feel weird now because I acted like I liked them. Should I just ask DH to ask her where they came from? I just feel so weird, esp since I see my in-laws all the time.
Any advice or suggestions?

Thats a tough one. Howw is your relationship with your MIL? For me, it would just be easier to keep them and wear them when we visit.

do you match your jewelry....can you say that despite the fact you like them, they just don't match anything else you wear????
ETA: how about blaming it on DH.....tell MIL that he said he doesn't like how they look on you

How is the hook part? Are they screw backs? If not, you can say that with earrings like that, you prefer screw backs so you won't lose them. Or the posts bother your ears.

Well, DH is being annoying and says he won't ask her where they are from. They are stone in your ear type of earrings which don't look good in my ears and aren't very comfortable (I have wide earlobes and my holes are pierced right in the middle - looks dumb to me)
I'm pretty sure I know where they are from - they have a jeweler and DH and I use his son as our jeweler - so I may just bring them to the son and even if they're not from him, he'll prob let me trade them in. I guess if she asks, I'll just tell her that they were uncomfortable.
Now I just need to bring back their Bath and Body works stuff and I am all set!! LOL

i am sorry you did not like any of your gifts this year.
i had a similar situation, my grandma gave me this diamond and peridot pendant for my sweet 16 and it was not my style. i asked everyone about it and returned it and got something i love to wear. i told her that i returned it and she was furious with me. she kept brining it up every time i saw her, but i finally said you know, i never would have worn that necklace, but now i wear this other one all the time and every time i do i think fondly of you and the fact that you gave it to me. that made it better, but i think she was still upset.

Oh don't get me wrong - I def like some/most of the gifts I like!!! My in-laws are always hit or miss though!
My earrings are diamond and peridot - wonder what it is about that!LOL!

Can I join this thread of how to return gifts from your inlaws that you will never use/wear/take out of the box? EVERY, SINGLE thing they bought me, I want to throw up on. I know I sound mean, but I think she purposely buys me hideous things.
She bought me all this kitchen and bathroom stuff, but hello, I just had a shower six months ago, and you were there! Why are you buying me ugly bath towels and pots and pans and cheese graters when I JUST got all brand new, not-on-clearance ones?
And how many times do I need to say how much I hate Lenox stuff? I have told her consistently for FIVE YEARS HOW MUCH I HATE LENOX! So WHY WHY WHY?!?!?! did she buy my a GIGANTIC Lenox urn?!?!?!?!?
And EVERYTHING was clearance items and she "doesn't save receipts". Do I really need to know that all my gifts were on clearance?
Oh, and those nesting tables she told me she was buying for my livingroom, well, they're ACTUALLY tv trays. If I WANTED tv trays, I would have ASKED for them. And NO, I should not have to understand that one of them is broken and the other four are chipped just because they were a "great deal" for all of 10 dollars
