Re: Tips on buying a house?
I wish I had known to double check the taxes with the town beforehand. I just went along with what the seller told us. I did find out the right price before closing though, but it was a surprise!
I wish I had known that our house insurance had to paid upfront a year in advance. It was just annoying because we didn't expect it.
That's all I can think of for now. Good luck!

Re: Tips on buying a house?
During inspection, make sure you test for Radon, Termites, Mold, lead in water, check the oil tank to ensure it is above ground... Make sure when walking around that there are no visible water stains or signs of water damage (e.g, smell the basement). Try to be on a hill rather than below grade (prevents flooding). Also, see if yourhouse needs additional flood insurance. There are certain areas- due to drainage- where fema requires additional insurance. All of these problems are hard to impossible to fix, require major maintanance, and are just a PITA. No problem if it occurs after you buy the house, but IMO- you don't want to buy someone elses problem. Good luck!
Also, love the area you are buying into. Don't settle for a terrific house in a not so great area. HTH!
