Smelly Dog!

Hi all. How do you keep your dogs smelling clean and fresh? As some of you may know already we adopted a cocker spaniel almost two weeks ago. We took him to get groomed this past Tuesday and got the works done, but he is starting to smell again. We haven't fed him any table foods because we know it makes there skin smell, but he is starting to get stinky againChat Icon I don't want to bathe him too often because I don't want to dry out his skin or increase dander. Any suggestions?

Re: Smelly Dog!

My girlfriend had a cocker and she was very smelly also. I think it is just the breed. You might want to try the wipes that they sell in Petco to freshen your pup up. They are called bath wipes.

Re: Smelly Dog!

ALso clean his ears often - that can help with the doggie smell.

Depends on what type of dog you have in regards to how often they should be washed. I have a lab and our vet said MAX every 2 months -- and only that often if absolutely necessary. The soap dries out their skin and makes them itchy and relases a lot of dander. But I think it depends on the breed as well.

ETA - I also read that wiping your pooch with dyer sheets keeps them clean-smelling. I haven't tried it tho.

Hey don't give cockers a bad name! Chat Icon

We have a cocker spaniel and don't have this odor problem. What kind of smell is it exactly?

We use something called Fur Breeze, a spa mist for dogs. You can order it at www.HappyTailsSpa.com

I do this. It does work. If I take him out and it's raining or he jumps in puddles I rub him down with dryer sheets. Works great

Cocker spaniels are prone to ear infections which can be stinky. I would check her ears.

Re: Smelly Dog!

I actually just checked his ears today after doing some research at the library about cocker spaniels. I had a dog growing up, but it wasn't as high maintance as a cocker spaniel. Anyway his ears had gook in them and they look red. This could definitely be where the smell is coming from, so I am thinking he may have an ear infection. Also I realized that the last couple of nights he has been scratching them like crazy. So I went to the pet store today and bought some cleaner and cleaned them out. Hopefully it will help. If not I will take him to the vet. I was trying to hold off until his pet insurance kicks in so I could get everything done at once, but if isn't better by the end of the week I will take him in. Thanks for the advice.

Hi- If they are red and have gook in them they are more than likely infected. Probably either bacterial or yeast. In either case a home remedy would not work. I would get him to the vet ASAP.

ETA: My last dog- a pug had chronic ear infections and it was so uncomfortable for her.
