does anyone know anything about fire island?
I was wondering if it's pet friendly...I just moved to sayville, and the ferries are around the corner, and someone told me that Gus can go on the ferry, and it's only like 2 or 3 bucks for him...but is he allowed on the beach there?
ETA: Gus is a yellow lab....

Yes Fire Island is very pet friendly - but they do prefer you have a leash with you.

Re: does anyone know anything about fire island?
Two things to be aware of. 1. There are a TON of ticks, make sure you check your dog and check him often! 2. Get to know each town's laws about dog's and leashes. For instance, you MUST have your dog on a leash at Ocean beach but you don't have to at Dunewood.

I think you might have to be careful if you go to Ocean Beach - the Land of "No". They don't allow much on the beach, so doggies may be forbidden too. Not sure....
Ocean Bay Park is fine.

Any of the beaches that the Sayville ferries take you to are pet-friendly, but bring a leash and like other said, watch out for ticks. Also, there might be deer around, so leash your dog if he or she is a chaser.

Re: does anyone know anything about fire island?
My DH and I love to go to Cherry Grove (it's gay beach but there are many straight people there too) but where there are gay men there are many dogs! We always took my parents dog there and brought her to Grove Pizza (2nd to Sayville Pizza) People there always bring there dogs. We prefer Cherry Grove over most beaches for several reasons: 1. Not many children 2. Outside bars 3. Very liberal fun place with cool people (not your juice head Robert Moses crowd) 4. DOG FRIENDLY- you just have to pick up after them 5. Cool stores One warning- doesn't bother us but it may bother some- clothing on the beach at the Grove is optional.
We will be putting Katie on Frontline for the summer as a tick preventive.
ETA: Its a good idea to give the dogs a bath after so you can check for ticks just in case- and no running in the bushes or dunes!

Re: does anyone know anything about fire island?
Dogs are everywhere on Fire Island but so are ticks, so while it is pet friendly, I don't think I'd EVER bring my dog there.
