Neurotic Mom Question on buying used baby clothing?

Now that winter is approaching, I'm noticing that clothing my baby is getting much more expensive. She lived in onesies all summer that were like $3 each if that. Considering that she still spits up, and has poop-plosions, I need to have a whole lot of clothes for her if I want to do laundry just once a week.

So, here is my question. I could afford to buy new clothes, but it really seems crazy to do so considering how fast she is still growing...

..but I'm a neurotic mom paranoid about germs. If my baby spits and poops on her clothes, I'm sure other babies do too.

So here is my silly mom question of the day: Is there any risk of my baby getting sick from used clothing? Of course I'd wash it first, but I'm just not sure how resiliant germs can be. What do you think? Are you buying all new?

I have gotten a lot of handle me down clothes for Claire from my niece and cousin, about 60-70% of her clothes are used, but still in good condition. All I did was wash them first.....I hope thats enough, she hasn't gotten sick at all!

I would only take them from people you know! I work with a patient population that is filthy and even if ther clothes are washed in hot, hot water they can still carry small germs and BUGS! Try Old Navy, and get interchangable outfits, it will cost less than half for 2-3 outfits.

I'm the first of my friends and my family to have a baby, so no hand-me-downs are available. I would be buying from strangers (ebay or consignment shops.) Thank you for your response emilain, I appreciate knowing that there is a risk. To Old Navy I shall go!

If you're extremely paranoid, you can actually get a LOT of brand new clothes with tags on Ebay. People usually sell them in big lots for very reasonable prices.

No problem! We actually had a patient that we admitted to psychiatry and we had the hospital launderer clean his clothes (which means very hot, industrial machines usued for bedding, etc) and one of the workers actually got scabies from the clothes AFTER they were washed. Now these are extreme cases, but why take a chance. I have bought 1 shirt that would match 2 differnt pairs of leggins and 1 skirt for about $30 from Old Navy. Interchangable is key!! Have fun, you can also get a percentage off if you get their credit card!! Happy shopping!!! H&M is great too, I think sometimes even cheaper than Old Navy and like their clothes better (imported from Europe) and GREAT quality!Chat Icon

Re: Neurotic Mom Question on buying used baby clothing?

My mom is the pricing manager in the children's dept at JCPenney at Roosevelt Field and she just told me that she put a whole bunch of stuff on clearance. She also just bought my son a bunch of separates that I can mix and match (they were $5-8 each regular price).

Also I went to Target the other day and they had a bunch of stuff on clearance. I got Nate 3 outfits - 2 jumpers with long sleeved shirts for $7 each and 1 with khakis, sweater and onsie for $12.

I've bought used clothes and had no problems so far. I wash them first with lots of detergent and babyoxyclean.
I guess its just a personal thing where each mom will feel differently.

I wouldn't buy used clothing. But I think the idea about new with tags from Ebay is a good one. I just bought Andrew a new fall wardrobe from Target for very little money...

We do hand-me-downs in my house between my sister's kids. I have a ton of Ralph Lauren dresses, Gap & Old Navy that we've been passing back & forth. I would buy used clothes if I could see them in person.

If you could catch something major from hand-me downs, I think our civilization would've died out long ago.

You know -- we should seriously start a "used baby clothing swap" on here between members. I'd definately trust the members here over someone from ebay or the goodwill or something. I was just thinking today how I don't think we'll have anotherbaby for 5-6 years and we should just pass her stuff on when she grows out of it ... I'd totally be willing to pass it on to people on here who need it!

That's actually a fantastic idea. For furniture and other stuff too! Maybe it's been done before? I haven't been on here that long. To the original poster I would suggest TJ Maxx or Marshalls as well. They have brand new baby clothes super cheap! Old Navy OUtlet out at Tanger is even cheaper than the regular store too.

Re: Neurotic Mom Question on buying used baby clothing?

Our babys' closet is FULL of 2nd hand clothes, and she isn't even here yet!! I plan on washing it all and plan on outfitting her from consignment sales/stores and hand me downs from my best friend who has a 3 year old daughter. Money is a major issue for us, and for the amount of time they actually wear the clothing and the fact that no one knows where it came from....

WHY NOT??? Consignment/2nd hand iis HUGE down here in the south...everything from kids clothing, to gear (pak n plays, cribs, swings, etc). There is NOTHING wrong with it

If you are concerned with germs, wash it before wearing and you can always spray with Lysol disnfectant AND THEN Wash it.

Actually if you read up on it is much better to uhave gently used clothing as opposed to new because it has been washed so much all the dangerous chemicals have been washed awayChat Icon

Can you do this soon? My husband is intent on TOSSING out our baby stuff!!! My poor sister's attic is fillled with the boy clothes (since my son's gets passed to hers) and I was supposed to keep the girl clothes (since her daughter gets passed to mine). He's told me he was tossing out the anything below 2T - it killed me. I had to reneg on our deal & have my sister take all of the 2T in case she decides to have #3. I've also been giving everything to the salvation army. My neighbor just had a baby girl, but I don't know her well enough to offer used clothes.
