When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
What happened with your medial insurance? Did you have to pay out of pocket for coverage while you were on a non-payment status or did you pay when you got back, out of your paycheck? TIA, I'm facing some difficulties at my job regarding this.

Re: When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
They sent me a bill while I was out, and I paid it. It was the same amount that would have been taken out of my check had I been working.

Re: When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
I paid once I got back. Basically they sent me a bill for the amount I owed them (lump sum).
[They totaled up the usual amounts that would have been deducted from the paychecks that I wasn't getting... if that makes sense. The bill wasn't very much at all.]

Re: When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
Our insurance is non-contributory for the employee ($75/mo for family).
During my maternity leave -paid for 6 weeks, if I had the family plan, it would have been deducted as it normally would from my check.
While on FMLA, I would have had to send a check in for $75/mo for the time I am not receiving a paycheck.
There are regulations regarding FMLA & COBRA, etc. If you have specific questions & want to FM me, I can track down the regulations for you (I'm in HR)

Re: When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
This is the way it worked for me...
I had 6 weeks of paid leave. I had the choice to either:
1- use my vacation/sick/personal time to make up for the cost of my benefits while I was out
2- Double up my medical benefits contributions (from my paychecks) when I came back from my leave.

Re: When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
After my six weeks maternity leave - which is soon to end- I decided to take 12 weeks personal leave - (3 months) without pay - so now we are responsible for paying for the 3 months for our medical insurance. Let me know if you have any questions...
Our company provides health insurance while we are on the payroll - after you leave the payroll - you are in charge for paying your own insurance. If someone decides to not return for longer than the 3 months - it then rolls over to COBRA - which brings the rates higher up!

Re: When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
I worked 2 days a week (bascially I check e-mail/voice-mail and made sure that anything urgent was forwarded to the right person or I took care of it quickly. They took my contribution out of that check. I was also allowed to pre-pay the expenses from checks prior to my leave. It was my choice.

Re: When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
I was on my DH's insurance but I know that while you are on FMLA your benefits stay in place. If you take unpaid leave after your FMLA runs out you are obligated to pay for your benefits. At least that is my understanding.
ETA: After seeing everyone's responses I am going to double check. I could have sworn that I read we did not have to pay for benefits during the FMLA part of our leave.

Re: When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
I was told prior to leaving that I would have to pay my portion of the medical and dental insurance that would normally come out of my paycheck, since I wouldn't be getting a paycheck for the 12 weeks I was out.
Well, they never asked me for $, I returned for a short time PT and its now 2 years later and htey never asked me to repay my portion. When I went back PT, I lost my medical and dental coverage anyway. So basically they paid my portion for the 12 weeks I was out. My company is good like that

That is what I was told I'd have to do too!

Re: When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
thanks ladies! this is my 3rd maternity leave with the hospital I work at and this is the 1st time they've asked me to pay them back! So... I guess I'll just keep my mouth shut since they could go back and charge me for the other 2 times as well.

Re: When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
The 1st time I paid a total of my 12 weeks to work in 1 payment The 2nd time, they never asked me (I got a VERY lame raise though that year so I am assuming that is why!!)

Re: When you took FMLA and had Leave without pay...
I had to pay it while I was still out.
My job covered through Feb, and I had to pay by March 1st.
