Who has great gift ideas????
It's my mother's birthday and Christmas and she's soooooo hard to buy for!!
It's also my nephew's first birthday on the 14th and it already seems like their house is drowning in toys! He'll probably get a million more for his birthday and for Christmas!
I saw the complete series of Beatrix Potter books in a box set. What do you all think of that as a gift? I know it's a little too grown up for a 1 year old, but I'm his godmother and I thought it would be nice to get him something special - a collector's item really - for his first birthday.

Something special for a 1st birthday is a nice idea...especially if he already has a lot of toys. You could also do something like get him a bond, to start off his college fund.

Re: Who has great gift ideas????
I like the idea of the books- I got a lovely hardcover collection of Curious George stories for my friend's son when he was born. I knew they'd be inundated with clothes and toys and I knew the book would sit on a shelf for a while, which it did. He's now nearly 4 and my girlfriend told me today that he LOVES to have the stories read to him. I also wrote him a little note inside the book, so I hope it becomes something he keeps in his family as he grows up.

I buy books all the time for my nieces and nephews because I am the only one who does, and they also have TONS of toys. The parents are usually appreciative and the kids like getting them too.
If he is one, the thick, cardbaord type books are great- they can really beat on them and they hold up. The Beatrix Potter is a nice set they can save for him for later.

Re: Who has great gift ideas????
what about starting a collection of something for him that you can add to every year, like buying him a Hess truck (or having someone in the states buy it for you). Those are collectible and worth a TON of money after a few years

Re: Who has great gift ideas????
You could do a first edition of a book - which are much more collectible that just a hard cover series that you'd buy today - I'd say Beatrix Potter, Winnie the Pooh, or any children's classic.
This is a good site for book collectors: http://www.abebooks.com/
Either that or an animation cell - not a limited edition - a production animation cell. I used to collect them so if you have any questions on it FM me.
