WOW-Update at bottom!!

REDDING, Calif. - A 62-year-old woman gave birth Friday to a healthy 6-pound, 9-ounce baby boy, becoming one of the oldest women in the world to successfully bear a child.

Janise Wulf gave birth to her 12th child. She is also a grandmother of 20 and a great-grandmother of three.

Family members said the delivery went smoothly, despite earlier concerns about the mother's health. Wulf, a diabetic, experienced swelling and higher blood pressure earlier this week, prompting doctors to perform the Caesarean section a week early.

Wulf and her third husband, Scott, 48, named the red-haired boy Adam Charles Wulf. He follows just 3 1/2 years behind his older brother, Ian.

"I hate to raise one alone, without a sibling," said Wulf, who was impregnated both times through in vitro fertilization.

The oldest woman on record to give birth is a 66-year-old Adriana Iliescu of Romania, who had a Caesarean section Jan. 15, 2005.

The Guinness Book of World Records also lists two 63-year-old women who have given birth: Rosanna Della Corte of Italy in 1994 and Acheli Keh of California in 1996. News reports, however, list Della Corte's age at 62 when she gave birth.

I feel the same way. This woman will be 80 when her child graduates high school. How can a 62 year old run around chasing a toddler. And she has great grankids...wonder how her older children feel about it.

I totally agree with you. In some ways it does a huge disservice to the child. The mother is already in not so good health - then what happens to the child??

I also wonder what the other children think.

Re: WOW

I posted this on Infertility this morning. I have a lot of mixed feelings on it.

Of course I am jealous that a 62 year old woman can get pg, and I haven't been able to, but this has to be using donor eggs as I can't imagine a 62 year pre menopause.

Part of me thinks how very selfish of her to bring a child into this world at her age. But, her DH is only 48, and in theory will be around to raise this child.

An ex boyfriend of mine parents had a huge age difference. His mom was in her mid 30's when he was born, but his dad was in his mid 70's (passed away before he was a teen). I once asked him if that was strange having such an older dad, and he looked at me like I was nuts, and said no, I cherished every moment I had with him.

So, wouldn't it be the same even if the it was reversed?

DId that make sense?

I see your point completely. I have a friend who has a similar situation with his dad being a lot older (he's the baby of 12 kids).

I think it's more just crazy from the point of view of seeing someone my mom's age giving birth.

Ummm, she didn't get pg through conventional means, so tying her tubes wouldn't make a difference.

I think I read your post like Lisa did, it sounded like you thought she accidentally got pregnant when she could have been retiring...when she had to have had a donor egg and had IVF, so it was a planned attempt

I agree!!!! If she is going to love this baby & be a great mother and not depend on my taxes to care for her baby then carryy on. I don't see a problem w/ it.

I don't know...62 is OLD.

It's going to be hard for those kids as they get older- between her age and already having diabetes, it's going to be tough for her to keep up with two little ones.

I think I'd feel more positive if these two kids were her first ones.

Re: WOW

See, I look at it from the older children's point of view. I'm 28 and my dad and stepmother have a 2 1/2 year old and a 9 month old. Neither of them are spring chickens. Granted, they aren't 65. My dad is 55 and my stepmother is 43. It was and still is REALLY weird to tell people that. And I've been asked the question "If something happened, are you supposed to take them in?" I would but it's like in the back of my head is another responsibility that I will be accountable for and it won't even be my doing. Does that make sense?

Not to say that she doesn't have enough love to go around, but babies are human beings and having one doesn't affect just 2 people.

I agree as well!

I remember when I was in elementary school there was a kid whose father was in WW2. Hed be standing at the gate with the rest of the parents picking up his son, running around the school yard with us too.
