Health Insurance
Im getting everything in order to get married in 45 days.
So we dont qualify for low income assistance for health insurance (& both self employed)and my quotes are coming in at $900 / month for me & FH.
We will never be able to afford a house
Any tips on low cost health insurance??? I havent been to the hospital in 10 years but eventually will be TTC so need to be prepared.
TIA!

Re: Health Insurance
You can try healthy New York. I did this for about a yr. It is all kinds of insurance plans at reduced rates for individuals or small businesses. I had no problem getting it. I had Aetna and it cost me 187 a month for single. It might be like 300 for a family. It was not hard to get. FM me if u want more info.

Re: Health Insurance
Definitely look at Healthy New York. Also, keep in mind that as a self employed person, you get to write off all the health insurance premiums off the top of your tax return. You still have to lay out the money but it might be benefical by effectively lowering your mariginal tax rates.

I agree. Healthy NY was designed for the self employed.

Re: Health Insurance
If you are self-employed and belong to a professional organization, that may also be a place to look - often you can get group rates this way.

Re: Health Insurance
I was unable to get Healthy NY cause I made a hair over the minimum.....but I dod end up getting GHI hospital only coverage. I don't remember how much it was-but it was enough that I had something in case of emergency.

Re: Health Insurance
I just looked at the rates and they are really bullsh!t. A family of two can't make over 33,000. Where can you even live on LI with that kind of salary. We struggle making more than double that! This state better come to it's senses.

Find a part time job that pays medical.
Starbuks is a good choice.

Home Depot and UPS also have medical for part timers.

Re: Health Insurance
You can get "group" health insurance with a minimum of two people listed as working...do you each have each other listed as employees? What type of self employment do you do?
A group rate should not be $900.
I work in insurance and could probably see you with an HMO or a higher deductible policy as a group for less then $500 a month.

Re: Health Insurance
If you are self-employed, check the Chamber of Commerce in your area. You will have to pay a small fee to join (tax deductible) and verify your business...but you will get a "group rate." The rate isn't as good as working for a corp, but defintitely is much better than paying out of pocket.
For family coverage, we pay about 600/month. Sure beat the 1800 we were going to have to pay a month.
I agree, Healthy NY doesn't help much at all. Insurance in general is insane.
