Giving baby water?

Hi everyone!
Can you tell me, when did you give your baby some water in a bottle? My son is a good eater, but sometimes I'd like to try giving him water in between bottles to hold him over. At what age did you give your babies water? My son is 3 months old.

Thanks!
Carolyn

Re: Giving baby water?

We didn't start giving water until she was 6 months old and then we only gave it in a sippy cup. The only thing she's ever had in a bottle is BM or formula.

Re: Giving baby water?

We gave Hannah for what appeared to be extreme discomfort during hiccups and that is typically only a small amount.

We also gave her a little on those really hot days a couple of weeks ago just to make sure she didn't dehydrate again.

Enjoy the ride

Re: Giving baby water?

A baby does not need water to hold them over. If your baby is hungry then he/she should get more formula or bm.
Water is really only for medical situations and should only be used when a dr instructs you too. That is because your baby shouldn't get full on water and not drink calories. He/she needs those calories right now.

I gave Molly 2 prune juice/water combo bottles (1oz of each) when she was 2 weeks old for constipation as per the doctor when she was on formula (I was working on my correcting my bm supply). It worked like a charm but that was the last water she got until she was able to drink from a cup.

Re: Giving baby water?

We started Jenna on water at about 6 months in a sippy cup to experiment with using the cup.
The only times before that was if she was constipated or had bad hiccups i'd give her an ounce or 2 to help.

Re: Giving baby water?

i called my pediatrician becuase my daughter opens her mouth when we drink, my mom has been giving her water out of her cup a sip here and there. the pediatrian said its fine as long as it doesnt interfere with her normal bottles and if i want to give juice add water to the juice. i only give 1-2 oz water in a sippy cup. Olivia will be 7 months this week.

Thanks for the advice from everyone. Chat Icon

Michele 31: I would never just give him a bottle of water in place of his formula. I know he needs his nourishment, and he is a big boy so he's definitely well fed. I know he is getting enough. I just wasn't sure if it was okay to give a little water, especially with the hot weather.

Thanks again to you guys!

Re: Giving baby water?

I gave my DS water in bottle from about 2-3 months on. Not IN PLACE of a feeding but in addition to. ESP. when it was hot out. He is now 3.5 years old and LOVES water so much. Maybe its not related but I really feel this has alot to do with it. He wont even look at soda and only has a few sips of juice every once in the blue ( I don't think he really even likes it but wants to do what he sees other kids doing)

I posted this recently :

DD is 2 months old now and I have given her 1-1.5 ounces of water a few times. It helps when she is contstipated or fussy. I gave her some on those really hot days too to prevent dehydration. hope this helps!

ETA: she always takes her normal amount of formula at her scheduled times so the wate ris just IN ADDITION to her feedings, not replacing the formula in any way.
