One of my friends at work usually has a hard time fasting -- every year she passes out and has to be given smelling salts or something in the synagogue. When she was pg, she asked her Rabbi for advice about nourishment. He told her it would be ok to have 2 tablespoons of xyz every 1.5 hours.

I spoke to a rabbi about this and he said it was fine to eat or drink small quantities when I was pregnant. It really depends on the source.
Jewish law puts health above any other rule! If the health of your child is at stake, then you can break any rule.

Personally I could never fast if I were pregnant or breastfeeding. I'd be too worried that I'd risk doing something to the baby. Maybe I just don't understand it since it is nt my religion, but it is just my POV.
I agree-
When I read the part about giving the baby formula for a few days so they could fast- I was like 
It is AGAINST Jewish Law to endanger your health with fasting. If a woman is pregnant she shouldn't fast, unless she really wants to in which case she is encouraged to drink loots of water and eat littel snacks every hour or so. It is certainly against ALL rules to have the baby fast. I don't know where that came from. Children under 4 are not to fast at all.

That quote was not about the baby fasting but the nursing mother. She should give the baby formula instead of BM.

Exactly. It all depends on which Rabbi you ask. As they say...two Jews, three opinions!
Personally, as observant as I am on the High Holidays, I really do not think that I would fast while pregnant. I would try to eat just what the baby and I needed, but no extra snacking. I could not imagine a pregnant woman not eating or drinking at all!
