Generic prescriptions Vs. Brand names
Do you notice a difference in effectiveness or side effects when you choose one over the other?

Re: Generic prescriptions Vs. Brand names
I did have side effects with the generic ortho tricyclen which I did not have with the brand name. My doctor said it is a frequent thing, and now prescribes just the brand name.

Re: Generic prescriptions Vs. Brand names
No I don't.
I get the generic brands of medication and my doctor told me it only take a bit longer for it to kick in since the dose may be slighly less.

Re: Generic prescriptions Vs. Brand names
Generic and Brand names have exactly the same medication.....same milligrams.....The only difference is the laboratory who makes them. And sometimes the same laboratory will make the same drug....generic and brand name. The price difference in some drugs are staggering at times.
ETA>>>I've never noticed a difference either....

Re: Generic prescriptions Vs. Brand names
Sonia- thank you!
I called my prescription co, and the rep said that the difference is in the inert ingredients, like coloring or fillers, which have no effect on how the drug works. A problem would arise if you happened to be allergic to one of the inert ingredients, which could happen with generic or brand name meds. Interesting.

Re: Generic prescriptions Vs. Brand names
OK, so it says that they can have different inactive ingredients, so if your body reacts to those ingredients differently the side effects can be different.

Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo is what made me wonder! I think i'll be going with the brand, since the price difference is small.

Just make sure the doctor writes "dispense as written" on the prescription, or the pharmacy may give you the generic, whether you want it or not - I had a problem with that.

Re: Generic prescriptions Vs. Brand names
For the most part I don't notice, but I have one prescription that there is a clear difference between the two.

Sometimes the patient would have to pay the difference.....

Re: Generic prescriptions Vs. Brand names
I had never noticed a difference in the past - but I am on one prescription that I take daily and I was violently ill on the generic. It took a lot of paperwork and faxing and headaches to get insurance to cover the brand, but they finally did and I'm so much better on it.
