Do you have a hard time making new friends?

I have 3 friends that I am close to but we are all at different stages of our lives so sometimes its hard to connect with them. DH & I are also moving out of state soon & I really wont know anyone. I have a hard time making new friends.

Does anyone else have a hard time making friends?

It is very hard for me to make friends. I don't get out enough really to even make friends. I only have one close friend and she is moving in July to FloridaChat Icon

Yes. I have a lot of acquaintances, but when it comes to the calling just to talk phase, I often say to DH "I'm not close enough to her to do that." Chat Icon

I am quite happy with the few friends I have. I do meet new people but I am the type of person who sticks to who I know. I do not like to get too close to people like that.

Re: Do you have a hard time making new friends?

I would say as an adult, yes. I never had a problem in hs or college, always had a ton of friends to hang out with. But I have found that since I moved to NY, most of my close friends are still back home. I have made lots of acquaintances, but it isn't the same. Most of my close friends down here have been DH's family: cousins, sisters, cousin's wife. Since I have a job where I don't meet people (I work from home) and I don't have children to meet other mothers, I decided I needed to do something to meet women. I joined a women's charity group in Sept and have really met some wonderful women. There are about 5 that I would consider my friends and we hang out now, go to dinner, etc.

My core group of friends and closest girlfriends are from back home still.

Yes, for both DH and I. We are in our mid to late 30's and don't have kids yet. When I was single it seemed that only my married friends wanted to hang out with other married couples. Now that I'm married everyone who has kids only gets together with other people who have kidsChat Icon i'll never understand that.

We rarely see our friends any more because of this. It's not that they don't have time either, we are just not invited to any gatherings that involve kids.

Re: Do you have a hard time making new friends?

I am glad I am not the only one. I left Ireland when I was 18 so I left a lot of friends behind. It took me a long time to develop the friendships I have today & I am related to 2 of them. Now I am leaving again. We don't have any kids & we probably wont be having any so meeting friends through kids probably wont work for me. I don't want to feel alone. I know I will be lonely for my friends here but I have to make an effort to meet people there and that scares me. I am just feeling a little down today.

Re: Do you have a hard time making new friends?

Yes because I'm quiet and most pwople my age are still heavy in the club scene.

Most friends are older than me and few. I hope this doesn't come out wrong and snotty, but I'm also very picky with who I'm friends with.

Re: Do you have a hard time making new friends?

im having a hard time finding friends that are married or very committed, time to hang and shop and go out (which usualy means the person doesnt have children), and works full time like me, oh and lives in CT

its hard..my Ct friends are single and me being married is an automatic non-invite to places like bars and clubs on the weekends- i cant say that im disappointed but i wish for every friend that i lose closeness with, that i can gain a new one

eta- i wish there were "want ads" for friends - where we can meet people like us
if i lived on LI it would be easy because LIF is such a great forum- but for me living in CT now, its just hard to meet people..like my hairdresseer- shes awesome but i dont think i could ask her to hang out- stuff like that - i dont want to come across like a loser or freak "asking girls out" but i just want friends!

Not really. It's pretty easy to make new friends, it's hard finding the time to evolve the friendships.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I came over to the US when I was 32, but I did have a sister here so at least that was someone to hang out with. I was very fortunate to make 3 great friends at my first job. We have all changed jobs many times, some got married, one had babies, but we still hang out.

I also joined the Hibernians after I was here for a year or so. It was hard to break into the circle and clicks there (especially as most of them were my mother age or older), but I stuck at it and now there are younger members closer to my age so I have friends there. It paid off too - I'm now the President (or did itChat Icon ). I know you said you are moving, but they do have divisions all over the country. A friend at our division is moving to NC and already located a LAOH down there.

Definitely hard to make friends! I have a few people who I consider friends...but nobody I can just call on the phone and say, hey, want to go to a movie today or grab coffee or something like that.
