Huntington toddler falls through LIRR train gap at Penn Station
(09/07/06) SYOSSET - A 4-year-old girl fell through the gap at a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) platform at Penn Station Wednesday. Police were able to rescue Britney Walker from the tracks about 15 minutes after she fell. The toddler suffered only minor cuts and bruises.
Walker is not the first victim to fall through, what some call, the large gap on LIRR platforms. The LIRR first came under fire when an 18-year-old was killed after falling through a gap at the Woodside station.
The LIRR insists it's taking this problem seriously. Officials say the LIRR is working closely with the National Transportation Safety Board to assess passenger concerns.

Wow, that is awful. I've noticed though everyday they do announce to pay attention to the gap since that Woodside incident. I hope they are trying to fix the problem quickly before someone else gets hurt.

It happened to my little cousin at the bethpage one and my aunt was actually holding his hand (and another child on the other) and his missed his step and was small enough to fall thru. Luckily he was ok from the fall.

I'm glad he was ok! & the child in this story too. They say to watch gap, but sometimes it is so big, little kids legs aren't that long.
I actually had one leg fall in the gap, but it was on the subway. VERY SCARY.

There are HUGE gaps in Penn Station on the ends of the platform. You'd think the last incident was enough for them to take action other than making announcements.

it took them 15 minutes to grab a 4 year old? Does that not seem like a long time to anyone else? Track 17 is the WORST... I'd bet that's where it happened...

Re: Huntington toddler falls through LIRR train gap at Penn Station
It happened on Track 18. I used to work in the city and take the train from Syosset, where the gaps are the largest... At 15 inches, I STILL can't see how someone can fit their whole body through.... But I guess it happens, as we have seen. I feel so bad for that little girl, and I really hope it was an accident and nothing more, KWIM?
