Where did your school come in on the new info?
My district is william floyd the worst one for suffolk county. they only talk about the paca middle school though. kryssy goes to the other one. do you think the numders are right? i am not to sure, but being how high my district was, even if they cut it in half(becasue the same instence was a double due to both kids had it reported) it still would be the highest are you worried or no?

Re: Where did your school come in on the new info?
I think William Floyd has always been among the bottom. I don't think students need to be at the #1 ranked school to have opportunities, but among the bottom I think it does affect students in some ways. I take some classes with principals and teachers from William Floyd and informally they have said violence is also a large issue (I know there are many districts where this is the case though). It would concern me, and I would send my child to parochial or private school or move.

Re: Where did your school come in on the new info?
We're ranked 132 (with a 278 high) Long Islandwide. I'm not worried about my school district. If my district was in the top of that list, my kid would be going to private school once they went to middle school.

Re: Where did your school come in on the new info?
I didn't read the entire article, but I did read a portion where the Supt of RVC said that it was ridiculous b/c everything has to be reported. He made the example of a snowball fight - when he was a kid, a snowball fight was exactly that - now, when a kid throws a snowball - it has to be put down as a violent incident. So, while I do think the numbers of incidents are inflated, or aren't exactly "violent" incidents, I would certainly be concerned if my child's school was one of the top ranked.

Re: Where did your school come in on the new info?
I've always known that William Floyd had a poor, poor rating. My kids go to Charles E. Walters (Longwood) School district. However, I strongly believe (and it's my opinion) that it is also up to the child and their parent to nourish the child's wanting to learn and guide them. It isn't only the school's reputation and ranking that offers children opportunities. It is the opportunities that we create for our children and them for themselves.

These are from Newsday, you don't have to log-in, like with News-12.
article
Ranking Chart ( a little hard to read)
Search for district
If you search by district you can see more detail on thw type of incidents. Some schools just have a lot of "intimidation without weapon" , which I assume is bullying.
Definitely read your rankings, but evalaute them based on the types of offense, not just the total & also take into consideration what you know if you already live in they area & your kids are already in the district.

When I click on the story under top stories, it asks me to log-in and I don't have an account. Could you post the actual rankings? Thanks much!

You also have to take into account the fact that schools do not always report incidents because they do not want to tarnish their good image

Really? I didn't know that. But the rankings are from whatever magical formula the state came up with, that isn't influenced by Newsday, but their sensationalism of it cannot be taken as fact.

Yes....Newsday uses all kinds of "studies" and "surveys" to report school information. And most of them are somehow biased. I never believe what I read in Newsday when it comes to school rankings.

I agree that I'd be concerned, but at the same time I believe they're inflated. I grew up in RVC and although it has been a while since I attended SSMS or SSHS, it was not a violent school. I don't remember there being any violence at either school yet the middle school is fairly high up on the list. I'm sure there were fights, but I don't remember hearing anything about weapons in school, which is what I'd be most concerned about. I'd want to know more about what constitutes a violent crime. I think it's also strange that some of the higher ranked schools in terms of violence are also some of the schools considered to be the best in terms of education.

What I find interesting is that since it is state-wide, I looked up the NY Journal News ( the lower Westchester paper) & it was a little hard to ind the one article, and basically, it said that Superindendants in Rockland county think there are some problems with the reporting. It was much less "we're doomed" than the Newsday article.
