Cat owners

How long would you leave your cats alone while on vacation? How many days without having anybody check on them?

Re: Cat owners

Only overnight. Any longer than that, they need someone to feed them, give them water and change the litter.

Re: Cat owners

Before Lucy needed meds, I had no problem with leaving her for a 3-day weekend - with an automatic feeder/water. Anything longer than that -without being checked on- I wouldn't do - the box needs to be cleaned and cat's (as reclusive as people seem to think they are) need attention.

Re: Cat owners

Absolutely never more than overnight. Who would clean out their litterbox for any time longer than that?

Re: Cat owners

I have no problem going away for the weekend. I leave her plenty of food and water and clean her litter box when I return.

However, I have a very odd cat in which she gets very po'd when I clean her litter... go figure? Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: When we go away for longer than a weekend, I have a pet sitter that comes twice a day to feed and play with her.

Re: Cat owners

We have left them for 1 week, with a huge bowl of food and water, and my aunt comes by 2 times a week to check on them and the food, etc.

I guess only overnight. I have someone come in every day to feed them, do the kitty litter and spend a little play time with them.

2, 3 would probably be the most. I can't leave mine for even one though because I can't leave food out. I have to feed them twice a day otherwise my one cat will gorge himself and puke everyone and my other cat gets nothing to eat. What a PITA.

Re: Cat owners

When it was just one cat, I'd leave her for a weekend with no problems.

But now there are more, I have a pet sitter come in (at least) once a day even if we just go for a weekend.

Re: Cat owners

Only overnight. My cats would turn the house upside down if they didn't have human interaction after a day or two. And if the litter box isn't cleaned after a day - FORGET IT! Chat Icon

Only overnight, any longer you would have to board them, or have someone come to your home.

Re: Cat owners

We have left our cats alone for 2 weeks, we have a friend who lives a few houses away from us and he comes and takes care of them every day. We look after his 3 cats also, we do spend time playing with them. We have also boarded our cats at a cattery, but we find that its very traumatic for them and they are often sick when they come back. I prefer to leave them at home, they keep each other company and have the run of the house. They are happy chappies!!!

eta...durr, my reading comprehension skills are crap. We only leave them alone overnight without someone else coming in to look at them. Sorrry!

We leave the cat alone for 2 nights -- we leave a giant bowl of water and tons of food. ANything more then that, my sister or someone will come visit with her for a bit. For long trips, the cat goes to my sister's house and hangs in the basement with my BIL.

Same. I have 4 of them, so the litter box would be a mess!

Re: Cat owners

I've done a Friday back Sunday with them, but now they they are on meds I wouldn't leave them for more than a day.

My neighbors come in and feed them and scoop the litter. We're leaving Sunday and they will take care of them for 5 days.

My little 4 year old neighbor loves taking care of them even though he is afraid of them.

this just made me think of my sad story....one of my cats was a carrier of feline leukemia, it was dormant, she was fine in all her 10 years, never any sign of being or looking sick. We went on vacation for 10 days and had a friend come over to feed her, etc... When we came back, she was sick. She was very stressed in those 10 days and had all signs showing of F.leukemia. She passed away 2 weeks later Chat Icon .

To answer OP, I would only leave my cats alone overnight, never longer.

Re: Cat owners

We've left ours for up to a week alone. We have a self waterer, left out huge bowls of food, and we have an extra litterbox that we put into use.
