Good Apartment Dogs
DH and I are thinking about getting a dog. We need a good apartment dog. Our apartment is a descent size.
We are thinking a Jack Russell, beagle, any ideas would help? TIA

Re: Good Apartment Dogs
I would check out Havanese but I am biased They are small - 10-12 pounds, hypoallergenic, non shedding, and don't bark a lot (we have two and they literally only bark when someone is at the door). They are also sweet, smart, affectionate, and cute as a button!
Here is some info: Havanese

Jack Russells need a very active life. My friend has one and it needs to run around her backyard daily. If they are bored they can get a bit distructive.
Maybe a small breed that's more sedentary.

I think Beagles tend to howl...but I may be mistaken on that one....ask around before deciding on that breed for apartment living.

Re: Good Apartment Dogs
Jack Russels are extremelyyyyy energetic and require tons and tons of active attention and beagles are howlers so other tenants may not appreciate that.

Re: Good Apartment Dogs
There are a couple of both in my apartment building, the beagles howl, and the jack russels have boundless energy. Their owners told me that they need a lot of exercise to keep them from being destructive.

Re: Good Apartment Dogs
Check out Boston Terriers. They tend to not bark-in fact we had to teach ours to ring a bell to go out because she doesn't bark much. (Once in awhile she gets spooked and barks.) They are easy to groom and a short hair single coat breed so they tend no to shed. They're very good with kids and easy to train. Only down side is that they are gassy and they can get a little depressed when they are left alone too long.

Re: Good Apartment Dogs
I have an italian greyhound mix and we used to live in an apartment. We would take her to the dog park to get exercise but she did well in the apartment. When we could not take her to the dog park, she would do laps around the apartment for exercise.

Re: Good Apartment Dogs
I have a Jack Russell and my parents have a Jack Rusell. I would not recommend one as an apartment dog unless you are will to go for alot of walks. Although they are small they need a lot of exercise.
