I am a preschool teacher and apparently one of my kids has fifths disease! He was in school on Friday and he looked sick but the parents kept telling us he was fine. He came to school today (but I was out today cause of my back) and the mom said he had fifths disease!!!!!! And he was in school! My boss didnt tell me at all and I am expected back at work tomorrow. My doctor isnt in on Mondays and now I have no idea what to do!!!!!!!!!!! Can anyone help?? I am almost 20 weeks.

Re: UGH!!!!!!! I am so upset!!!!!
I would call your doctor emergency number and have someone call you back - telling you what you should do.
I don't know anything about fifths disease, so I can't be of much help, sorry

Re: UGH!!!!!!! I am so upset!!!!!
DO NOT GO TO WORK! Any good doctor will tell you you need to stay home. That is horrible. When they found a case in my school last year, the nurse went around asking all of us if we might be pregnant, and if we were, to stay home for the rest of the week.
ETA: I didn't realize I sounded frantic. I'm sorry. You are mostly out of the danger area of when it would be most harmful to the baby, however, if possible, I would not go to work at least tomorrow.

Re: UGH!!!!!!! I am so upset!!!!!
try not to worry too much. i was just exposed to fifths this week at my daughters school and she just came down with the rash this morning. apparently, you are only contagious until the rash comes out- then it is fine to be around others. you need to notify your ob and set up an appt for a blood test (parvovirus b19) they say over 50% of women are already immune to the virus. unfortunatly the virus can cause miscarriage (2%) or severe fetal anemia(10%) in early pregnancy. i am still waiting for my results and freakin out a little too.. good luck, dawn
the most concern is in early pregnancy so you seem safe.

OMG Noreen, I can not believe that boss lady didn't tell you. She's been there, how could she not inform you. I'd stay home tomorrow too or atleast til you talk to your doctor and get clearance from them.

Re: UGH!!!!!!! I am so upset!!!!!
I am 99% sure that once the rash is out you are no longer contagious...however, Fifths is very serious to pregnant women. I definately would NOT go to work tomorrow, and make an appt at your Dr's. There is some kind of test that they can do to see if you've ever had it (lots of people have it without ever knowing)
Good luck

Re: UGH!!!!!!! I am so upset!!!!!
My sister was exposed about two years ago and she m/c at 9 weeks. They said the baby was severely deformed. I don't know if there was a correlation but I wouldn't take any chances. Please stay home!

Re: UGH!!!!!!! I am so upset!!!!!
STAY HOME!!! CALL YOUR DOCTOR! The nerve of someone to drop off their child at school so they don't have to take a day off of work to care for their child!!!! I would be livid too! People are so inconsiderate & selfish.
ETA: Keep us posted

Re: UGH!!!!!!! I am so upset!!!!!
OK well..I am definately staying home tomorrow. My doctor doesnt come in until 12 in the afternoon and I refuse to be around that child all day long. I spoke to my boss and she claims the child is ok now and can come to school (no doctors note by the way). So according to what my doctor says tomorrow, will determine if I go in Wednesday. I only have tomorrow and Wednesday before break anyway.
My dh and I have decided that if there is an outbreak in my classroom, I may decide to leave before June. If they dont take the necessary precautions, I am not putting myself or my baby at risk.

Glad to hear you're going to stay home tomorrow. I'm amazed that those parents are allowing their child to go to school.

I can't believe you'd send your child to school knowing he/she had this - and put a baby at risk!
I'm glad you're taking care of yourself!

Re: UGH!!!!!!! I am so upset!!!!!
the problem with fifths disease is that when the child presents with a rash, he is no longer contagious and can go to school. unfortunatly it is one of those illnesses where you are contagious before you have any signs. my daughter and 2 others have it and are in school right now, with drs. approval. but 3 of us are in early pregnancies and need to get tested.
