Different genders sharing a room?
What is your opinion on this. I would LOVE a boy, but I am hoping for a girl b/c we only have a 2 bedroom house. We are looking into co-ops, b/c the rooms are bigger, but it would still only be 2 rooms. If we have a boy, he will have to share a room with my daughter.
She is only 10 months. I am thinking it would be okay for a couple od years at least. Anyone every have to do this?

Re: Different genders sharing a room?
When we have 2, they will share a room no matter the gender.
We are in a 2 bedroom apt now, but even if we do buy the house before #2 comes along, they will still share a room. There is no need for privacy, all they will do in there is sleep and sometimes play. I would rather have the 3rd room as an office, rather then another crib set up.
The only time I see a problem is if one is a sleeper and the other a screamer. That problem is genderless though.

I would think it would be fine until they are a few years old - maybe even until the oldest is 5 or so.

Re: Different genders sharing a room?
We plan on having the twins share a room until they start Kindergarten, or they begin to drive eachother crazy...whichever comes first.
I shared a room with my brother when I was little, it was nice to have company!

Re: Different genders sharing a room?
I think it is okay to share a room until they start school. Then after that, privacy might be good especially if they will be doing their homework in their rooms, etc.
That's what I would like to do because when we have our second, I'd rather have both in the same bedroom on the same floor as our bedroom until they are old enough that I'd be okay with one of them on another floor since our house has 2 bedrooms on the 1st floor and 2 bedrooms on the second floor.
My husband doesn't think they should share a room after the age of 3 or 4.

Re: Different genders sharing a room?
its ok Id say until they are like 5 or 6 but after that prob not plus there is a law about different genders sharing a room after a certain age you might want to look into that.

Re: Different genders sharing a room?
With my twins they will share a crib for a while and then they will be in the same room until they outgrow their cribs and they are ready for their "big kid" room with big kid bed and furniture. Then they will be separated into their own rooms. I always had my own room growing up and that's why I wanted a 4 bedroom, Master, 2 kid bedrooms and an office.
I already feel guilty that despite them being twins one will have a much bigger room than the other. I guess whoever comes out first gets the bigger room I should say that to my belly.

Re: Different genders sharing a room?
My niece and nephew are twins, and out 26 months they are still in the same room. The only issue was when my niece moved to a bed, and my nephew was still in his crib. I swear she tormented him those first few weeks .

I have never heard of a law saying different gendered children can't share a room. I could be wrong but, I can't see why that would be againts the law! Granted it might be a little weird as they get older, but they are family! I guess I could see in a foster home situation, where the children are not related.
Who is actually gonna call the cops to report that your two children are sharing a room and are diffirent genders anyway if this is true? This really doesn't seem right to me.
What if you only have one extra bedroom in your home for the kids to share? I think sometimes it is necsessary, and not againts the law. I see nothing wrong with children sharing a room, when they are different genders, as long as you don't keep it this way as they get too old, because they will start to want their own space and privacy.
ETA: I could be wrong about the law, but this is JMO.

I would be shocked as well if there were a law re: genders sharing rooms...if so find it and I swear DH will be gone tommorrow...LOL Just kidding! But seriously, IMO in my household I would keep the genders seperate but that is my own opinion of course.

Re: Different genders sharing a room?
I HIGHLY doubt there's a law saying different gendered biological siblings can't share a room- if so, then my ILs should be arrested. They ALL (he has 4 brothers and sisters, with crazy age differences) shared a room with an opposite sex sibling at some point in their life!
My sister and I shared a bedroom until we were 15 and 14!! All we did was sleep and do homework in there anyway....

Re: Different genders sharing a room?
My brother and I shared a room up until I was 7 and he was 5. we had bunk beds. After that we were separated and Im glad. My children if boy and girl will NOT be sharing the same room. They will have thier own rooms, own style, own personality and space.

In that case I probably agree with you. The reason being is that there is no parental consent involved and there is no blood relation.
