Does this make sense to you? Work issue

So, I'm the editor of seven magazines here; I must adhere to a budget. This year, my budget was $39K. I spent about $33--saving the company a lot of money. So in preparing the new budget for the fiscal year, I decided to make creative uses of the $39...which gives me great flexibility.

I turn it in...only to find that w/out telling me they already took the $ away and made it $33!! I will try and duplicate last year's success, but I'm not sure I can! Talk about being cheap! I had to do everything over....I'm so annoyed. At least tell me you wanted me to do actual...and were taking away the usual alotted amount. Stinks. Boo!!!!Chat Icon

Also, kick me a nice bonus for saving some money!!! In my dreams.

Don't they realize that there are yearly price increases? Plus inflation? Chat Icon

It's very common for companies to cut budgets in departments that operate under-budget. That's why there tends to be a lot of "wasteful spending". Managers want to make sure they'll have the funds in future budgets, in case they're needed in the future.

I think that's how companys are

I remember once there was a great deal on coach tickets to china- and the VP said if you fly coach now- then you will always have to fly coach b/c they will reduce the budget- I don't know why my director thought flying coach to china was a good idea- but you get the point

It just bothers me; what they are cutting is the content of the magazine.....how about some integrity! A lot of my writers deserve raises....

Ugh, that is awful! Do they mind if you go over budget next year? At my job the budget is always less than we actually spend, and it is just assumed we will go over and they will find the $$ somehow.

It's annoying that you now have no flexibility in your budget but it makes sense if a dept is operating 15% below budget levels to reduce it.

I think that's pretty standard. Our budget gets changed mid-year sometimes & we have to rush to spend it all, so they will give us the same the next year.

Even in college, I was the editor of the literary journal & I had to make sure we used to whole budget, so we got the same next year.

Here, if they give us a cretain budget, they'd rather we use creative money saving ways to do more with that money, than not use it all. If they wanted us to save money, they'd have given us a smaller budget.

I was going to say the same thing. Sad but true.
