I am a BAD fur-mommy....go ahead and flame me...
I am SO bad.....Boomer will let me cut his nails and normally I do about once a month....oops.....it's been put off and forgotten about TOO many times. I have been saying I want to get a groomer to come do both dogs, just trying to find the extra cashflow.
Fast Forward to today....I come home and notice Boomer licking his paw....I see his dewclaw nail has punctured his pad....
DH rushed him to the Vet before they closed and they cut his nails, gave us antibiotic and a wound flush.
SO....can anyone tell me a DECENT nail cutter b/c I KNOW the one I have S U X and how often am I supposed to cut his nails?
(The rottie won't let us near her nails)

First of all, you are NOT a bad mommy. We all make mistakes You did the right thing by going to the vet and getting him taken care of. No advice because I am terrified of cutting our dogs nails but lots of

Do you walk him on the sidewalk? That should act as a natural nail file.

While the dogs are relaxed, and laying down, you should file them every once in a while w/a regular nail file. I do that every so often.
That is...if they let you

Also if you walk your dog regularly on the pavement, this helps to keep the nails shorter.

You can try Petco! Its $5.
Edited to say: Petco will do it by the grooming area... I am not talking about a nail trimmer to bring home. I am too worried to trim Gizmos nails by myself in fear of cutting them too short and bleeding.

You could also try a dremel tool if you are afraid to cut. The only downside is that it will make a noise not unlike a small drill.
