Pre-natal vitamins
I am 10 weeks (tomorrow) and I had my first check up. My doctor didn't prescribe pre-natal vitimins to me. He told me to take the One a Day Woman's that I was taking before I conceived. Should I be worried?
I have an appointment with him on Monday. I spoke to my sister who just had a baby and she was shocked i wasn't taking them. Now I am worried. Does anyone know when you should first take them and what happens if you don't?
TIA!

Re: Pre-natal vitamins
My doctor also told me to take one a day BUT that was when I was trying to conceive. Once we did, my doctor gave my different prenatal vitamins. I would call your doctor.

Re: Pre-natal vitamins
Although I was prescribed pre-natals...I've heard plenty of women aren't and are told that the vitamins they take regularly are ok.
I've even heard women being told taking Flintstones vitamins are ok...
I guess if your doctor says it's ok, then it's ok. You can buy an over the counter pre-natal vitamin also.

Re: Pre-natal vitamins
Dr prescribed me pre natals, but my insurance didn't cover them. I take CVS prenatals, 100 pills for 8 bucks. Can't beat that! Dr ok'd them, they are very similiar to the prescription prenatals.

My doctor told me to keep taking the CVS prenatals too. BTW, they are buy one get one 50% off this week. I just bought some yesterday.
I would think the one a day would be fine as long as it contains folic acid. I know the CVS prenatals have 800 mg.

Re: Pre-natal vitamins
I went at 7.5 weeks for an U/S to confirm PG...went back a few weeks later and got the bag full of goodies...I guess to make sure the PG stuck.

Re: Pre-natal vitamins
I'm surprised he didn't tell you to take something with more folic acid in it. You should get at least 0.8mg of folic acid (the most available OTC). You could buy Prenatals over the counter and take those to get your required folic acid.

Re: Pre-natal vitamins
I would go with what your doctor tells you since every doctor is different. HOwever if you are concerned just give them a call..

Re: Pre-natal vitamins
I agree with everyone who said if you are concerned to call.. I am one of those people who the Dr. told to take flintstones.. I couldn't stomach pre-natals w/ baby #1, and with baby #2, they told me not to change! Everyone is different, and every Dr. is too...
Best wishes for a happy and healthy preganancy!

Re: Pre-natal vitamins
This should make you feel better- I never took one prenatal vitamin my whole pregnancy. My dr was old school and was extremely relaxed. (I also ate everything I wanted while I was pg). He Had originally prescribed them but I could not take them - I would immediately throw them up. I asked what I should do and he said to stop taking them. Period. Meanwhile, my baby girl was born a few weeks ago and she is absolutely a perfect angel!
9 and then 10 on her APGARS!

Re: Pre-natal vitamins
I had to stop taking prenatal's very early with Andrew because of Major constipation. With this pregnancy I didn't want history to repeat itself so I take flintstone's and I try to get the extra iron from my diet.

Re: Pre-natal vitamins
Thanks guys. I am not going to call my doctor since i am seeing him on Monday- and the few days won't make any difference. The One a Day Woman's has 100% of the daily recommended dose of folic acid adn 100% of the daily recommended iron.
Thanks for reassuring me that its OK if I don't take the vitimins so far. For some reason the last few days I have started to panic about the baby- although nothing has really given me a reason to. I just can't wait until the appointment on Monday.
