Job Advice Needed

DH transferred to Raleigh, NC. I quit my job and went (very happily). Starting job hunting 2 weeks ago. On a whim, I applied to be a recruiter for Robert Half. They called me in the day after the job was posted. It is mainly a sales job and I am really a HR Generalist. After going back and forth with them (and trying to turn it down at first), they want me to take a job with them now doing perm recruiting. I am not sure if it is what I want to do. Besides that, the pay is on a draw so I have to pay it back once I start earning commissions. Not sure what happens if I leave before it is paid back. There may be another opening in a month or 2 for a different type of recruting position there with a guaranteed base if I am interested (not a definite job yet though). I only had one other interview so far for a Generalist position.

Do I take the job and see if it is for me or do I wait it out longer? I am starting to get nervous that I won't find anything. Also, I have not been thrilled with being a Generalist. I have to let Robert Half know today and I can't make up my mind Chat Icon

Re: Job Advice Needed

Go with your gut...something is telling you that this is not the right position for you. If you can swing it financially, I would wait it out and see what else comes along.

Re: Job Advice Needed

If it were me, I'd take the recruiter position. Then I'd feel things out to see if there was room to grow there or not and see if you like the change.

After a little bit (plus getting settled in your new surroundings) if you didn't like it you could start looking again.

Just be very aware of the money situation and where it's going to go when in case you need to make a quick exit.

Good luck with your decision!! Chat Icon

and both answers are how I keep going back and forth. This is so hard.

We can make it one more month without me working before we have to touch our savings.

Ask if you can come in and sit with another recruiter for a day or two. In these types of jobs, I don't always think they are open and honest about what the jon entails.

Does it invovle cold calling? If so, how many dials are expected in a day?

Are you expected to work after hours so you can meet with prospects when they are done with work? If so, how many nights a week?

Do they help with marketing and finding prospects? If so, in what capacity?

I would say- try & keep looking b/c I used to be a recruiter and it is a high-stress position. When you work on a draw it is even more stressful!
You need to really be into it- or else you won't make any money & you have to put a lot into it- lots of sales calls, etc.

Re: Job Advice Needed

I sat with the person I would be reporting to for about 2 hours last week. It is all cold calling to start. I get to use the Robert Half name but I have to find my own clients and candidates. I will have to go out and network to do that (especially since I am new to this area and know noone). There are meeings everyday at 7:30am and 5:00pm to go over the numbers. Other than that, I work at my pace doing what I need to do in order to succeed. I was not told what the expected numbers would be but that I had time to build up my business.

I will be in your shoes in about a month. I would wait for something in your field or at least for something that pays "normally" the whole pay scale thing worries me. Chat Icon

How long did you recruit for? Were you on a draw? I was hoping to find someone here that does it/used to do it.

Have you ever cold called before? If not, it's extremely hard and takes a lot out of you. Plus, do you have to buy lists of recruits or do you just use a phone book? How do you go about even finding the people to cold call to?

They may tell you that you get to work at your own pace, but there are expectations of you. You are probably expected to work from 7-8 every day and make calls most of the day which is very hard. If you aren't putting up your numbers, they make sure you are working hard enough.

I worked for an insurance company for a little while and I did all the cold calling and buying lists and pounding the payment. It was hard and I didn't enjoy it at all. You job offer sounds like it has a bunch of similarities.

FM if you have any specific questions.

Okay, after hearing that I change my vote. Keep looking. Chat Icon

That is a really stressful environment to be thrown into. There have to be more jobs out there somewhere!!

Re: Job Advice Needed

Also...if you are working from 7am til at least 6pm everyday, how will you ever look for something else...you won't have any time to go on other interviews?

I'm sure you could find something, just for extra $$$ even at the grocery store or the local mall if it becomes an issue financially. Good luck!

Re: Job Advice Needed

My uncle owned a couple of recruiting co's in the city and this much I remember: the recruiter's job is unreliable, like many sales positions. Also, it is not easy to go back to regular HR once you "cross over" into agency work. It CAN be lucrative, but so much depends on the economy and the state of things in the particular industries you will be focusing on.

There is also some game-playing with applicants, which isn't always a. ethical, or b. nice.

Hello... definitely go with your gut. Just an FYI... I've lived in the Raleigh area for over 6 years now, and Robert Half is ALWAYS advertising for that position. I see it all the time. Not sure if that is a good thing or not. Definitely go with your gut!

That is interesting. Thanks for the tidbit. It seems as if there is significant turnover in their department so I guess that is a sign.

So where in Raleigh are you?
