Anyone else having trouble figuring out a schedule/routine?

I must be really dumb but I just can't seem to get us on a schedule/routine. Kevin (4 months) gets up at different times each morning and nap times are all over the place. Whenever I have to make an appointment for something I panic because I have no idea what Kevin will be doing at that time of day (Napping, feeding....).

How did you figure out your schedule?

When your child is that young and doesn't have any set schedule yet, its hard for you to try to have one because you're trying to accomodate everything else around their naptime, mealtime, etc.
It does get easier to do once your child is a few months older and has a pretty consistant schedule, I promise. Although every once in a while, they will change it on you.

I agree with the above post. When they are that young and don't have a consistant schedual it is hard. When things start to get on schedual it stsrts to get a little easier. Sorry I'm not much help.

So I shouldn't worry so much that we don't have a great schedule right now? He'll get a bit more consistant when he gets older....say after 6 months or so?

Yes, when your baby is a few months older, it should be easier because there should be some sort of schedule. Its hard to pinpoint if it will be at 6 months or 8 months because that depends on the individual child.

I feel the exact same way and don't even know how I am going to be able to get Emily out of the house and to the sitter when I go back to work in a few weeks.

She is only one month old now and I hope it will get better! I have a hard time making social commitments to people or even running errands because I don't know what her schedule will be like. She used to sleep in the car -- she's not doing that at ALL anymore!

The only thing I keep telling myself is that by responding to her needs and letting her decide when to eat/nap, etc. I'm giving her a sense of security and love that will carry on in her life.

Or I could just be spoiling her!

You're not spoiling her. She's a newborn and she is totally dependent on you. You are being a good mother!

After reading "Secrets of the Baby Whisperer" and "Healthy Sleeping Habits, Happy Child", I was able to get Nate on a daily routine. The time change last week threw him off bc he now wakes up an hour earlier, but it's still pretty much the same.

Re: Anyone else having trouble figuring out a schedule/routine?

MM2004....we have way too much in common! Sidney is 4 months old also and everyone keeps asking me..."Don't you have her on a schedule yet?" We have what I like to call a "pattern". She is pretty consistent with going to bed at 7ish and waking at 7am (with anywhere from 1-5 wakings in the night). But during the day she will eat roughly every 2 hrs. But there is no set time for that cause her naps are so inconsistent. They are anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 1/2 hrs. And she also won't really sleep in the car anymore. I get very stressed when I am not at home.

Sidney used to go to bed around 10pm but I thought that was too late so I started waking her up in the morning at 7am and she slowly fell into a bedtime of 7pm.

The twins don't really have a schedule - other than sleep through the night. We don't really worry about a schedule though.
