OK Here's our sleep problems

Getting Miranda to sleep is no problem whatsoever 95% of the time. I can get her in the "mood" and put her down awake and she falls asleep on her own fine. Naps go well as well most of the time, sometimes they require a little more work but nothing too outrageous.

Sooooo here's our problem. M goes down at 7pm and begins waking up about every 2 hours at 9pm. We run up and give her the pacifier and she's fine. I go to bed around 10 and give her a bottle because without it she would only be getting 22-24oz a day in. BUT after that she keeps waking up and I am dying here. I don't know what's going on. I've put her down without the pacifier and she does OK for a while then wakes up looking for it. She's still swaddled so she can't find it on her own and even when she gets a hand free she doesn't find it.

I can't do CIO out. I've tried. I just can't do it. Hearing my baby cry is the most traumatic thing ever to me. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Or ideas why she's waking up?

Last night we put her in her snuggle nest around midnight and ignored her and she stayed awake until 2:30 kicking and talking. I finally bounced her to sleep at 3 and she was up again at 5:30 (typical waking time) so I fed her. She finally went back down about 2 hours ater for 30 min.

She's not getting enough sleep but she'd not cranky or fussy either. Do I just have a non sleeping child?

Re: OK Here's our sleep problems

When she starts waking up every couple of hours, is she crying? If not, and she's just talking and kicking her legs, why not let her entertain herself? I did this last night when Alex woke up at 5am... she babbled for a little while and then fell back asleep on her own.

You know our story - for months Alex was waking every 2 hours. We used CIO, but that's only because Alex takes to it so well and hardly fusses. The key is that she's probably waking every couple of hours out of *habit*, and nothing else. Unfortunately, I can't think of any non-CIO ways to break her of the habit!

why not break the pacifier habit? Take it away - cold turkey - I bet she wont miss it and she will sleep better!!

That's a good idea... is she waking when the pacifier pops out? If you break the pacifier habit and have her go to sleep without it, maybe she won't wake up everytime it pops out?

How old is Miranda now? Depending on her age,you can make the last feeding cereal & a little milk to wash it down..that way she's full & content.
My son did the same thing til about 5 months, after this- he'd sleep the whole night through.

I've tried. She still wakes if she goes to sleep without it and other than letting her sit in there and cry that's the only thing that gets her right back to sleep or picking her up which I try not to do.

Beth-she wakes up crying. If she's not crying I do leave her alone. I was thinking it was hunger because she's not a big eater during the day but she doesn't even eat every 2 hours during the day so I know its not always hunger.

Ugggh. I wish I could let her cry but I am just not ready for that. I lasted 2 minutes the other night. Chat Icon

Hmmm, well, then, it definitely sounds like habit, not hunger, and because you always come to her and put the pacifier in her mouth or rock her to sleep, that's what she has come to expect if she wakes in the middle of the night. I couldn't handle letting Alex cry either- it breaks my heart - so the night we decided to do it, I slept downstairs in the basement and hubby took care of it. She cried for 20 minutes and then fell asleep.

Re: OK Here's our sleep problems

Joseph does the same thing...every night is different. Sometimes every 2 hours and sometimes I get a nice 5 hr and 4 hr stretch. But he's always hungry. *I* think it's because he's not eating enough BM/formula during the day and those nighttime feedings make up for it. I've asked the dr about it and he has said I could just have a hungry baby and that's when he prefers to eat. Like you, I can't do CIO -it just doesn't work. He eats and falls RIGHT back asleep so I really can't complain... I think it'll break as they get older...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

If Miranda ***** on something, paci or bottle she does go back to sleep but my god I am so freaking tired. She takes at least 2 feedings after she goes to bed and I will feel like I am starving her if I make her cry instead of feeding her. Ugh ugh ugh!!!
How do you cope with no sleep. I try to nap with her sometimes but a lot of days that just doesn't happen.

Very very hard. yesterday I was so tired I thought I was going to fall asleep while driving. I have the same problems with you girls. However last night he went 5 hours.

I don't understand my son during the day he will go 7-8 hours without food and then at night he can only do 5.Chat Icon

I try to feed him more but he refuses!!! He seals those little lips of his. Every day is a suprise I lwant to cry when I hear other babies are on a schedule.

My mom and aunt try to give me suggestions but after watching him they also agree. He has a mind of his own and does whatever he wants when he wants.Chat Icon

ETA-CIO is not an option. He screams while I am making his bottle as if he is in agony. We also have a crazy neighbor that lives upstairs. She bangs on the floor when I let him cry.

Re: OK Here's our sleep problems

I can't nap during the day at all. Around 3-4:00 it hits me hard and I need to sleep SO bad but he just won't then. But I do go to bed for the night the minute he does. Friends and family think I'm crazy that my day ends at 7:30/8 but it's the only way I can cope! Do you notice she sleeps better if you give her a bath before bed? Joseph does - I'm almost to the point of bathing him every single night!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I hear you - I lost it yesterday! After pacing the floor and strolling all over and not being able to get him to nap (while all he did was fuss) I just lost it and cried.

I thought for my whole life that motherhood would be so natural for me - that it was what I was meant to do...and while loving him and nurturing him I can do perfectly - this sleeping thing is killing me - it starts to make me feel like a failure...

I have the same problem. I can't nap during the day so I'm pretty much screwed when Alex decides to have a bad night! (on the weekends, that is) That's exactly how we've learned to cope in our house. We go to bed around 8pm. Hubby takes the midnight feeding, and then I take the 5am feeding. Before CIO, DH took the midnight feeding and I took the 2am, 3am, 5am and 7am feeding Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon And, YES, I WORK TOO!

Alex sleeps sooooooooooooooo much better after a bath. I'm so tempted to bathe her every night but her skin gets so dry Chat Icon

Re: OK Here's our sleep problems

Is she starting to cut teeth? Sarah seems pretty pain sensitive, she always wakes up at least once a night if she has a tooth coming in. No fun, each one can take a week to come in. Then we get a few days reprieve before it seems like the next one starts.

Also, we have a white noise machine going in her room. We are on a corner and the side of our house is on a fairly busy street that's a main thoroughfare into our development. So fire trucks, delivery trucks, etc. come by at all hours of the day and night. The white noise machine seems to block all that extra noise, so she is able to sleep through it.
