Medical Billing & Coding : Courses or Classes
My Mom is interested in taking some classes to learn about medical billing/coding .. she is looking to perhaps do this part time for a doctor's office or hospital once trained (she has many years of experience in dental and doctor's offices as an office manager and assistant.. but does not know the claims/coding side of it)
Does anyone have any recommendations or information about this ?? Or does anyone actually DO this, or know of anyone who does this for a living (or just for extra cash?)
Are there courses offered online?
Thanks!

I do it!
My boss paid for me to take the course, so I have no idea how much it costs.
It was super easy, and it's a good job.

Re: Medical Billing & Coding : Courses or Classes
Thanks Nic and Tania!!
Nicole, did you take an online course or did you go to school for training? My mom left her last job, (figuring she'd want to be retired) but now she is itching to do something parttime and make some extra $$
Are jobs easy to find (doctors offices primarily? or maybe hospitals?)
Thanks again girls!!

Re: Medical Billing & Coding : Courses or Classes
In my case, it was a little different.
I was already working as a medical receptionist, but they needed some billing help, so they sent me for the course. It was 8 hrs a day for 2 days.

Ahh gotcha Thanks!
Maybe that is an option for her, she could try to find work for a doctor as an office worker/receptionist (she has TONS of experience) and maybe they'll consider training her ..
I'll pass the info along

Re: Medical Billing & Coding : Courses or Classes
I took a course on Medical Billing and Coding at Branford Hall...a tech school in Ronkonkoma. The course was 3.5 months ( I think they have made it longer now) and at the end, we all took the certification test.
It wasn't too hard, very interesting but after I worked for a medical billing company I knew this kind of work wasnt for me.
Let me know if you want any more information.

My best friend does it. Her boss paid for it also. She says all the same stuff!

Re: Medical Billing & Coding : Courses or Classes
I did it for a few years. I did not take any courses, just started out as data entry, learned how to use the coding books, and took it from there.
My neighbor does it from home, i should ask her if she went to school for it.

I used to do it. If you can avoid the reception/patient side of things, it is much less stressful.

yeah, I use to do it for an actually billing company. We worked with the hospital, I did the doctor's bills and fees, another company did the billing for the actual bed space you take up. I never had to deal with patiets, just insurance companies. The reception part must be a pain.

Ahh ok .. it seems like there are a variety of ways to approach this..
Janice, no biggie but if you ever happen to come across your neighbor (who works at home) if you could ask her if she took classes or not that would be great..
Thanks all! Im sending Mom this info

Re: Medical Billing & Coding : Courses or Classes
I spoke with my neighbor. She never took any classes. She was the receptionist, then started billing for the office. Then she had her kids and they told her she can do it from home. so she still has that practice and picked up two more private practices. She stops by each office twice a week to pick up and drop off.
guess that really did not help the original question.
