We are starting to look at new homes and came across one we like but,
it is across the street from a school. We haven't seen it yet in person but we are going to make an appointment. Anyway, what do you think some pro's and con's would be living across the street from a school. We are not sure if it is elemtry, middle or high school.

Taxes are usually higher when you live that close to a school from what I have heard.
I think there is also a big difference between an elementary school and a school with older kids.

Bus traffic
that's the first thing i thought of
although the buses would only be an issue during the day, and at night it would probably be very quiet
tough one

Parking - some areas have parking restrictions on school days along nearby streets so staff & faculty can park.

Re: We are starting to look at new homes and came across one we like but,
We found a house in West Islip that we loved, but it was on the same block as a Catholic school and church.
I took a day off from work to "scope the place out" and saw the amount of buses and traffic and I guess it turned me off. I also went on a Saturday and there were lots of kids playing in the ballfields and stuff.
Plus, on Sundays, there was even more traffic with all of the masses going on at the church.
I loved the house, but I just didn't like all the commotion.

We live around the corner from the school...can see it from the living room window. It's an elementary school and my step-daughter goes there. It's very convienent when she forgets things at home!
Since it's not the same block, maybe I don't notice too much about the traffic...but we have never had any issues with traffic or buses.

I would personally not buy a house that close to a school. the noise level and traffic would are a huge factor!

I always felt bad for the owners of the house across the street from the middle school I worked at. The kids would hang out all over the lawn- it was so annoying.

DH father lives in West Islip across from the catholic school, I thought it would be so noisy but it isnt bad. I always ask them that and they have no problem.

Yes, it's the bus traffic and the mini-van/SUV traffic. Depending upon the percentage of working moms in the neighborhood many moms drive their kids to and from school. In front of some schools it is a real traffic hazard in the morning and afternoon. Too many vehicles.

It may be a problem during the morning and then in the afternoon after school is out, but if it's an elementary school, I would probably be fine with it.
High School, probably not.

I would not do a HS...schools are drug free zones, so kids just have to walk out of the zone/across the street to light up...and thats where they hang out.
