Re: can someone explain the blood cord registry thing...
there are places you can pay to store your cord so that if down the road someone in the family is sick those cells are available to use. My doctor told me that alot of the times the cells are not the right ones that the sick person needed so then the family feels like they wasted their money banking them. I did not bank my cord , instead at the hospital I was asked if I wanted to donate it...which I did..and then I was given a number that is connected to my cord and this number is then given to the pediatrician and I guess they keep it on file in case needed.

Re: can someone explain the blood cord registry thing...
The cord blood is packed full of stem cells. Cells that can regenerate very quickly.
We got it as added insurance we hope never to use (like I never want to use any of my insurance policies, but still have them)
The initial cost is around $1800 and about $125 each year after that. In addition my OB charged me $300 to collect
It was all worth it. I never want to have a woulda, shoulda coulda moment as I saw a friend go through. If the cells don't help, at least I know that we tried - otherwise I will be kicking myself

Re: can someone explain the blood cord registry thing...
We used Viacord for cord blood collection. My sister has MS, and we hope that one day the stem cells might aid in helping her. Otherwise, we view it as an "insurance policy." Just in case.... It is expensive (about $1800 initial fee, $125 per year and $400 to the OB/GYN), but we felt like if we needed it in the future, we'd be sorry if we didn't do it.
