How long did it take for your babies cord stump to fall off? Alyssa will be 4 weeks old tomorrow - one month on Thurs !!! - and hers is still there! I cant wait to give her a bath - her hair is getting greasy! LOL I thought ti would have fallen off by now. isnt a month a long time for it to take? TIA for your replies. Dawn :)

Re: umbilical cord
10 days. We left it alone. No alcohol or anything and it dried out quickly. Alcohol is still 30% water so that kind of defeats the purpose a little.

Same here, I left it alone and it fell off on its own.

Re: umbilical cord
Umm, I think 4 weeks seems like a really long time for the umbilical stump to still be on. Have you spoken to your doctor about that?
Also, why not wash the baby's hair using the football hold. Thats what we did in the beginning.

Re: umbilical cord
Andrews fell off after 1 week. We didn't put anything on it. Our ped said it could take up to a month for it to fall off.

Gianna's took forever to fall off too! She was about 5-6 weeks old when it fell off. We left it alone, didn't put anything on it at all. I think it took so long cause they left so much of it on her.
Some just take a little longer for the stump to fall off. My PED told me their practice record for a stump to fall off was 3 months old!
ETS: We gave her sponge baths and washed her hair with a washcloth.

Katie was about 2 1/2 wks old. My ped told me to put alcohol on it to help it dry out and fall off faster and it does NOT hurt the baby to use alcohol.
You could always just wash her hair - hold her in your arms and use a cup to dump water over her head and wash it with baby shampoo and then rinse it out.
ETA - I think you can wash her hair as long as you dont get her belly wet. Your dr probably didnt want the soap to get in the bellybutton.

Re: umbilical cord
Ella's came off at about 8 days. She helped it along a little though - I didn't see it, but during a diaper change Al claims she ripped it off and threw it
It was barely hanging on at that point. We did put alcohol on it twice a day to help dry it up (per our ped).
At our last appt, our ped was saying the speed at which the stump dries up/falls off is connected to their immune system functionality. 4 weeks sounds really long - what does your dr say?

oh my goodness! I havent heard that thespeed in which it falls off has anything to do w/ the immune system!!!!! Now Im nervous...WAS ANYONE ELSE TOLD THIS? The drs office said as long as it doesnt look red or infected, swollen etc not to worry about it that it will come off when its ready..

Re: umbilical cord
Caiden's took about 6 weeks to fall off! Up until then we were giving him sponge/washcloth baths. We did wash his hair though.
I did use what they told me to use. Maybe that's why it took so long. I also think since Caiden was a bigger baby his cord seemed thick so that might have had something to do with it?
I wouldn't worry too much about it... it will fall off when it's ready too!

thank you for posting this. I feel better that I am not the only one. They did leave quite a big piece of cord there so Im thinking maybe that has something to do with it. I finally gave in today and washed her hair with shampoo even though dr said not to I couldnt handle the little greasball like that anymore
