Re: Elem Teachers...First Day and Week activities...

I am middle school- on the first day after the usual articulation stuff, I am going to give my kids a reading survey, to get a feel for their attitudes towards reading and their interests, and let them choose something from the classroom library.

Then I am going to have them do a baseline writing piece. (It is required by my Region but it is a good place to start anyway) The baseline takes three days- they compose on the first day, revise and edit on the second and do a second draft/publish on the third day.

There is very little teacher prep (till you have to read it all, of course) but you really do get a lot of info about how the kids can write, and you can see what they can do on their own. I usually get lots of great lesson ideas from the baselines; many of the kids have similar strengths and weaknesses.

Re: Elem Teachers...First Day and Week activities...

Let's see what I'm doing. The first day not much except organization. class rules, icebreakers ( teacher t/f quiz). The next couple days I'll do a short writing piecs, this year it is biopoems. Then maybe goals, glyphs to kick off the graphing unit in math and reading survey. I might also do a literacy timeline and begin the firsst 20 days of reading workshop.

Re: Elem Teachers...First Day and Week activities...

First day BINGO is a board we made and we do it within the class. Kids need to find others w matching items (ie: someone who has the same favorite sport). The kids like it and we do it at the end of the day to let them have some time to get to chat.
The bags are paper bags w/ a sheet I send home. Kids need to fill the bag with four items that represent them. We then take a couple minutes of day two and three to share them out. The kids LOVE to be able to share.
I also have kids bring in a pic for a writing treasure box activity later on. As angelbear mentioned, we will do a literacy timeline as well. I start the first twenty days on Monday.
FM if you want more info or etc.Chat Icon
ETA: We do goals too and I make a bulletin board out of it w kids' pics.

Routine, routine, routine. I set the tone. What is expected and what behavior is not tolerated. I will read them a book on rules and then have several small groups create little pictures to create a large rules quilt. We'll read 1st day jitters and do an activity, we'll read chrysanthemum and do a graph of how many letters are in each name, we'll do a writing assessment and I'll take pictures and we'll make a time capsule.

I teach K and the first few days are 1/2 days. I do a lot of routine stuff ex: unpacking etc. but the first day I read the night before kindergarten, and they make a self portrait. Their parents are with them on the firs day. The next day when they are on their own I read the kissing hand and do cute activities with that ex: sequencing activities etc. Try checking out some websites. The web can be so helpful.

I am moving up to 2nd grade from K this year, and some things I have planned are: find someone who (ice breaker), rules/routines, beachball pass where they tell everyone their name and something about themself, and the all about me bags.

Re: Elem Teachers...First Day and Week activities...

I teach 1/2 Special Ed in NYC so I will be doing the following:

Morning Meeting -- going over routines, Name activity (If your name is on the rug, pick it up -- song/chant that I do --- FM me if you want to know how it goes --the kids find their name on a card and then we put it on the word wall to start the word wall)
Read Aloud: Crystantemum

Math Lesson 1 - I haven't actually looked at my book yet to plan this!! Most likely it is just introducing the math routines

Reader's Workshop: What does reader's workshop look like and sound like? (management/routines) Kids practice with look books

Writer's Workshop: What does writer's workshop look and sound like? (management/routines) - kids practice with small moment across 3 pages of something that happened to them this summer.

Social Studies: Brainstorm and write class rules

Academic Intervention period (AIS) - I am just going to do an extra read-aloud if I have time to and will probably use Arthur Goes to School.
