Cord Blood Registry

I was just wondering how other people were dealing with this decision and if anyone knows of any research that has been conducted (other than by the sites who provide this service report).

Re: Cord Blood Registry

My doctor wasn't very pushy with this and it didn't seem like it was necessary. However, you never know when you're going to need it...I think it's pretty expensive though...Chat Icon

Re: Cord Blood Registry

I have been doing a little research on this, and it has been on the news recently.

They said they are working on a national registry, like the blood bank, that everyone contributes to and everyone has access to.

My brother is an ob, and he didn't do it.

Re: Cord Blood Registry

We considered it, but it seems a little too expensive.

Re: Cord Blood Registry

I've read that experts liken it to a very expensive insurance policy that you'll probably never use.

If you can afford it, it can't hurt but I wouldn't go into debt to do it unless your family has a history of medical issues that can benefit from cord blood.

I wish I could donate the cord blood but Huntington Hospital only collects it if you are banking it privately. I THINK North Shore Hospital is one of two on the island that collects cord blood for the national bank.

What I like about donating to the national bank is that if for some reason you do need to use your cord blood and it is still there you can get access to it.

Re: Cord Blood Registry

I am planning on banking Kaylee's cord blood because of things that have happened in my family. FOr example my SIL was in a car accident 2 years ago and suffered from a traumatic brain injury, My brother was in an accident 6 years ago and ended up with a spinal injury that left him paralyzed. My DH's grandmother and aunt died of strange cancers, so I figure it is just added insurance just in case. I know a lot of it can not be help even with the cord blood but they are hoping that over time they will be able to grow new cells from the cells in the babies blood that could help in cases such as my brothers and SIL. For $160 a month for the first year and then $120 a year after that I will spend the money as a just in case factor.
