Cereal and fruit....

When you give cereal and fruit at a feeding do you decrease the bottle amount? Ava's bottles are usually 8oz....so should I reduce them to like 6oz when she has the cereal and fruit and then back to 8 when it is the bottle alone? Also, how soon after do you give the bottle when you give cereal fruit....1/2 hour later or about an hour? I am so clueless

I'm also clueless and we didn't even start the fruit yet!!!

Katherine used to take 4 bottles a day, from 6-8 oz. Now since starting food, she's usually down to 3 bottles a day. I kept them 8 oz; if she drinks it fine, if not, I throw the rest out. I guess just see how much Ava wants.

She eats twice a day--AM and PM. I mix the cereal with an 8 oz bottle and she finishes the rest of the bottle right afterwards.

From everything I have you read you should not decrease their formula or breastmilk intake when they start solids.

I did decrease the formula bc he wasn't drinking the whole bottle. Before cereal and fruit, he was drinking 8oz. When we first started solids, I was making the normal 8oz bottle, but it was just going to waste. Now, I make a 6oz bottle and use 1-2 oz for cereal and then he'll eat a jar of fruit. I give him the solids first then the formula. If he wants more formula, then I'll make another 2 oz.

I don't know if I'm feeding Kevin right but he's growing and thriving so it can't be too bad.

I give him a regular bottle (6 oz) when he gets his solids. I usually give him half the bottle, then some oatmeal and some fruit and then he finishes the rest of his bottle.

This is how its supposed to be done. You want to make sure that their fluid intake doesn't decrease and they also still need what is in formula or breastmilk. Solids should not replace this.

Yes, I decreased the amount of formula he takes. In the morning Jake has cereal and fruit and his usual bottle is 8 oz. But when he has solids, (3x per day) the bottle is less. At the first morning feeding he takes 6 1/2oz. I give him cereal and fruit and the bottle follows immediately. Plus the cereal is mixed with formula.

When I asked my pediatrician, at the time Jake was still taking 7 - 8oz of formula at a feeding as well as solids, he told me he wasn't eating enough solids if he could still take so much formula at one sitting. So he told me to decrease the formula and increase the solids. He said that as long as I didn't go below 26oz per day, it was fine. Jake was taking 32oz a day before solids and now it's between 26-27oz per day.
