BFing moms feeding question

My son seems to like to nurse forever and ever sometimes. I saw a LC and she said that he just likes to hang out. I am not so sure that he has the whole sucking process down 100% yet. I started out in the hospital formula feeding then went to pumped milk and now he is nursed.

What is your feeding routine like with your son/daughter. What I mean is do you nurse on one side, change diaper, offer other side, etc.

I just feel like I keep flipping him from side to side and getting no where.

Thanks!

There are different ways to do this but the normal pattern is to nurse for 10-15 on one side, then switch to the other. Whichever side you END on, you START on the next time.
Your baby is probably going thru a growth spurt..that happens and they nurse more often. Also some babies nurse for comfort- sorta like a pacifer.

Keep a log of how long you are nursing, at what time and which sides. That always help you know what is going on.

You can tell if your baby is sucking by watching for a swallow at his throat.

My LC has me switch back and forth, I don't think that's out of the ordinary to do.

Do you switch back and forth more than one time? When do you take your daughter off one and move her to the other?

Re: BFing moms feeding question

My LC said to let the baby feed as long as he wants on the first side and then switch. The baby should end the feeding on each side. Sometimes the baby is just there for comfort. Now that Jesse is older (almost eight months) he rarely feeds longer than 15 minutes on a side. When he was younger, sometimes it was 30-40 minutes. I guess all LCs have different theories.

I feed him on one side for 10-15 minutes and then burp him and then switch. Sometimes I burp him during the 10-15 min. feeding if he gets fussy. Sometimes i change him in b/w or after he's completely done. The next time I feed him I starte off on the breast I ended up on the last time.

I agree with Michele, I find that my son nurses many times just for comfort. I know for sure he isn't hungry b/c he just ate, but he'll want to nurse more.

So how long do you let him nurse for comfort?

About about 5-10 mins b/c he usually falls asleep. Even when he doesn't fall asleep I don't leave him more than 10 minutes. If he starts crying, a pacifier does the trick. Does your son use a pacifier?
