Do you think (esp. if you're a teacher)
That it's possible to teach/manage ALL of the students in a class?
Background: we have a new administrator in our school. She didn't teach very long, maybe 5 years but I think less. She was in the classroom with Ms. F, an experienced teacher who has two boys who are tough to work with (8th graders). Ms. F. was told by New Admin that those boys would no longer be a problem as soon as Ms. F. has a better handle on the workshop model (the structure that NYC wants). Ms. F. thought that was unrealistic and so do I, but maybe we're being negative.

My sister has been a NYC teacher for 14 years and we say those who can't teach....become administrators!! 
I think no matter what, when a teacher is reviewed, the administrator will ALWAYS have to find something to suggest improvement on... always. If I were your friend I wouldn't get too worked up about it (easier said than done, I know).
ETA I was a teacher for a time in Spain (6, 7, 8th grade) and there is no way I ever had the whole class under control....so my answer is no, I don't think it is possible.

When I taught, the principal I had the most respect for was the one who still taught a class for one period of the day. I think she had a much better handle on what was really happening in the classroom and in the school in general.

The Workshop Model
because we can do it ALL with a full class.. The Workshop Model is ideal for small classes .. something we don't have.. When she gets a class with 10 kids then maybe she can juggle it all.. That admin needs a reality check

Totally agree! And no, in fact, you can have control over 26/28 kids, but those 2 can ruin it for you. I have that. I have control but I have 2 with ADHD, 1 with a MAJOR discipline problem and possibly one with Aspergers. They give me a lot of grief. Therefore, I think a class that is TOTALLY out of control is indicative of a teacher without control, but when two are the problem, then the teacher is doing fine!
I had a pair of parents whose child is exhausting. They didn't want their son to change, but rather they wanted me to change how I dealt with him. If a teacher is doing fine by the other 99% of the class, then it's the child who needs to change. If 99% of the class is out of control, then the teacher needs to re-evaluate his or her methods.
And for the record, TC and the whole Workshop model...<<<insert a load of crap icon here>>>

I am glad I am not alone...
And nearly all our classes average around 32-34.
MissJones- LOL about TC- this new person has been pushing the Teachers College curriculum map on me too. I told her that the teachers have already decided what to work on for the rest of the year, but she is insisting on the TC model.  I have nothing against it, I just think we need something with a little more substance to interst the kids.

Totally agree. My kids are bored!!! We use Everyday Math which is very hands on and easy to enrich, although it jumps around which I don't appreciate. How can a child learn to tell time when you go over it every 2 weeks??? But, again, you can add onto it easily. But with TC, you can't work with it. It won't bend. And concepts are either over the head or under, never on their level. I've noticed tremendous improvement based upon the things I've done with them, not thanks to TC.

I'm not a teacher, but I do have my masters in school psych, and hope to be working as a school psychlogist starting in Sept. (so if any of you know of any openings, please pass them on). Honestly, without knowing anything about the workshop model, I have to say that it is idiotic to think that ANY one program or system is going to work for ALL children! This is the reason that we have support services. Children are individuals with different needs and respond differently to different approaches. Maybe these two "problem" students will respond to the Workshop model, but I am certain that in their place, there will be 2 more who don't do well with it.

See, now, I work in a school with the OPPOSITE problem. We are to find ways to have completely differentiated instruction the entire day, no matter the subject Because THAT'S ideal, too, right??? Doesn't really work in chorus, HELLO! But I'm supposed to "MAKE" it work

I mean, I can handle it, but the poor classroom teachers are running around like chickens with their heads cut off. There are some classes that have completely individualized instruction for math. How ridiculous is that? Granted, we max our classes out at 16, but that's SIXTEEN different things you have going on at once!

I HATE TC....If I could, i would burn it to the ground. It is all this cr*p that is screwing things up even more in an already screwed up system.
This is only my first year in the DOE, but to be honest, I also think it will be my last. Way too much dictating and constant change. They don't give any one program a chance. They change programs faster then people get divorced. It is truly nuts.
What I have learned is how not to run a school!
