Eating Spinoff: Do you know anyone who has successfully kept the weight off?

For a long time? Do they have to count and measure every morsel? How do you do it? I have been up and down and up and down again for the past 10 years. I obviously know how to lose it, I just can't seem to keep it off permanently! And sometimes I feel like I live at the gym. Although sometimes months go by that I don't go. It's a never ending struggle.

Why is it that my brother gets blessed with the metabolism where he can eat Burger King every night and never gains an ounce! He could have left some of those fast metabolism genes to me! Chat Icon

Yup, me Chat Icon I'm 5'4 and up until 7 years ago I weighed between 155-165. Not obese by any means, but overweight for my frame. So, 6 years ago I decided to change my lifestyle completely. I stopped eating junkfood, but what really did it for me is that I started a consistent workout routine. So, for the last 6 years, I workout 5 days a week for about 40 minutes a session. At first it was HELL, but after a few months it became a habit for me, and now (with the exception of my pregnancy) I LOVE working out. I love how it makes me feel after, the adrenaline rush, the results, everything. It has become my best method to deal with stress, and if for any reason I miss a workout day, I get sooooooooo cranky! With the working out I was able to bring my weight down consistently to about 140lbs. Then I met DH, who is a health FREAK (because his father died at 50 from heart disease). He does all the cooking so by being with him my diet has changed radically. I don't eat any junkfood, no processed carbohydrates, all wheat or organic, lots of fruits, veggies and fish. And, we both gave up meat. Ever since then I've stayed at about 130lbs, and that's really without any effort, it's not dieting, just a lifestyle change... and let me tell you, I feel so amazing. I haven't gotten sick in years and I have more energy than I ever used to have...

My 2 aunts have kept a lot of weight off for a couple of years now. They both went on weight watchers.

1 gained a little back & has remained there. I think she lost too much at first.

Neither one ever eats dessert at family functions. Chat Icon

One works out a little, I think the other
I don't think eat many carbs, b/c her husband is still trying to losse a lot of weight, so they cook for his diet.

My mom lost weight too, but not as much. She has kept it off for about 3 or 4 years. She goes to the gym almost every day.

ETA- an Sandra, I hear ya with the genes. My brpterh was underweight in college. He used to have to keep food in his car, b/c he'd get so hungry so fast.

My husband is very thin to--thank goodness he doesn't have sisters--they'd hate him if they didn't have the same body type!

See I love working out too... but sometimes my schedule gets hectic and I can't fit it in for months at a time....that's when the regression starts. Sigh.

It's great to hear that you can maintain it pretty much effortlessly. That means there is hope.

Wow-that's great, Beth. I am also 5'4" and when I was around 160 I strated excersicing, but not enough I guess & then I stopped & gained, instead. Now it seems so hard to get back to 160, but I now I should really be between 130-140, too.

I used to work out when DH was in school, but now I just watch tv wioth him.Chat Icon

I think the key is to find what works for your body type... working out and eating a more organic/veggie diet worked for me, but it might not work as well for someone else. I know girls who work out everyday and they NEVER lose weight. For example, every few months I switch up my routine - for about 6 months I would swim everyday with DH. Great workout, right? WRONG. I gained like 10lbs! Chat Icon So I went back to jogging and that's when it came back off. Then my brother convinced me that I HAD to start lifting weights. I did that for about a year and OMG I looked like a freakin' gorilla even though I kept the weights low! I stopped lifting and took up pilates instead, and what a difference! My point being, I really think you need to experiment to find the right formula for your body and then try to be as consistent as possible. My brother told me when I started working out that once I hit 3 months of consistently working out every week it would become habit... and for me, he was right.

I am 5'2 and have weighed between 110 and 115 most of my adult life. I think for me eating healthy and working out on a regular basis help. It is all about finding what works for you and your lifestyle.

My mom lost about 50 lbs a few years ago and kept off 35 of them. I lost 60 that year and gained it all back! This was on WW

My mom lost ALOT of weight. Probably 100 pounds if not more on WW about 7 or 8 years ago. She has kept it all off. She pretty much eats what she wants but much smaller portions and automatically makes healthier choices now. She also runs on her treadmil a few times a week.

You make it sound so easy- I give you so much credit. I wish I could eat that way and be fine with it. I just like food too much, I guess . . .

I am the same . I started of thin, then got too thin. Then, got large. Then medium, then thin, then large.

I am trying to get thin again and keep it off.

I have a cousin who lost 99 pounds 25 years ago. But, I don't think she's healthy in the head. She exercises everyday and I think she takes a lot of laxatives.

I have another cousin who lost 50 pounds and kept it off for about 20 years, but she smokes A LOT.

yes, my fh's cousin has lost over 90 lbs and has kept it off for the last 2 years. he doesn't smoke, but he does watch what he eats and exercises.

Not trying to do free advertising, but there are people in my WW meeting that have lost 50- 100 pounds and have kept it off for several years. There are also a few who have kept it off for a year or so. They do still go to the meetings every week and all say they do have to continue to keep track of what they eat and continue to exercise.
