does age really matter in the work place?

This morning I was having a conversation with another employee and we both work in the clinical office of a school. She was defending herself against another employee and added in "yeah she has a mouth but I am older then her". I always wonder if age makes a difference in the work place?

i think definitely. it can go both ways--at my age i know i will be overlooked for higher jobs because they want someone who looks older and has more years of experience (even if it isn't relevant). my mom also went back to work in her 50s and was overlooked since some considered her over the hill. luckily she got a very high paying, responsible job, but it saddened me that people wouldnt give her a chance.

I agree with everything above.
Depends upon the industry and it can work both ways. Same with gender.

I agree with what everyone is saying but I think its interesting how when the claws come out age becomes a huge deal.

My husband started a new job a few weeks ago as a Sr. Accountant at age 23.

During conversation, a person under him thought they were the same age. When he found out that my DH was 10 yrs younger the expression on his face was priceless.

YES!!!! It shouldn't- but it does. Try being a young, female attorney when every secretary you ever had is older than you. It makes a difference.

Re: does age really matter in the work place?

I work in a Dr's office...do medical billing, records, etc. I don't really have a problem with my coworkers, but I've had problems with the PATIENTS.

I once had a patient call and make an appt to come in and discuss a bill with me....when he got to the office, he did a double take, and said, "I'm not discussing my financial situation with a KID...get me someone who knows what they're doing."

It didn't matter that I've worked there longer than everyone, and can do things with my eyes closed... Chat Icon

Age doesn't, experience does.
