Need ideas on what to do with old kitchen cabinets...
how do you reface? Can you paint over them and if you can, what primer do you use?

It depends on what they are made of. If they are wood sand, prime and paint or sand and stain. HD or your local paint store will give you recos on primer and the type of paint to use.

our cabinets were painted wood. I took the doors down, cleaned everything really good, then repainted the cabinets and the doors in a high gloss white. it really helps give the kitchen a face lift that it needed.

Sand, prime (2x), paint & polyurethane (2x) Its totally doable. It wont last 10 years but it will look nice for awhile.
ETA: You mean wood right?

My cabinets were the WORST I mean really bad but they are wood so I decided to refinish them my self I destressed them white. I have to say I am amazed how good they look and everyone really loves them it is pretty easy. If you have a Benjamin Moore store by you go in and tell that you want to refinish your cabinets thats what I did I described what I wanted to do and they help me every step of the way. GOOD LUCK!

You can paint them and add new hardware to freshen them up and modernize them...
OR you could do a professional refacing which is what we recently did. Ours were so awful and we needed new appliances so we went for it. They add new doors, new hardware, trim and in some cases new drawers but keep your cabinets in tact. It only took 4 days with new counters and sink installed....here are some recent pics...It's more than painting yourself, but cheaper than a full remodel. We did the backsplash ourselves.
Good Luck with whatever you do. Image Attachment(s):

Laurie - Your kitchen looks great!
Unfortunately, I don't think they are wood cabinets and if they are, they are covered with that stuff that you stick on top. I'm afraid to rip it off as I don't know what I will find. I think we'll get some inexpensive cabinets from Ikea.
Thanks everyone!

Thanks all -- shamrock - good luck to you.
We were lucky ours were hardwood cabs - just really ugly and outdated.
