NYC was #10 on the top ten big cities

1. Colorado Springs, CO
2. Austin, TX
3. Mesa, AZ
4. Raleigh, NC
5. San Diego, CA
6. Virginia Beach, VA
7. Omaha, NE
8. Columbus, OH
9. Wichita, KS
10. NYC

**interesting thing about columbus...1/2 of the US population lives within 600 miles of Columbus...pretty central I guess

naperville, il is actually really nice.... about 40 mins. from chicago to the southwest--- very kid friendly. DH and i are moving a suburb near that area this fall, b/c naperville real estate itself can be a little expensive for just starting families---

OMG! I grew-up in Wichita, KS!! I can't wait to tell DH that my hometown (where we could have bought a mini-mansion for $350,000) was ranked in the same list as NYC. He'll never believe it (frankly, either do I). I wonder what the criteria for this list was...

From what I've heard, Boise is becoming quite a popular spot. I have a friend marrying a Boise-grown boy and they're considering moving back there!

the mag says:

start with population - 50-300K for small cities 300K+ for large cities

screen out retirement havens (50%+ over 50)

eliminate cities with low educational scores, high crime rates, absurdly high housing costs, declines in employment or income less than 90% the state median

remove bedroom communities and places where people identify themselves as being from a smaller locale within the area

rank the reamining on:
economic opportunity (income, job growth, quality of life, quality of public schools, arts and leisure, park space and stress related ailments, and ease of living gauges (commute times, divorce rates, population density and weather)

limit counties to one city each unless city #2 has more than 75K in population and a distinct identity

more data on job markets, housing prices, schools, ambience, weather, and taxes. Interview school board, residents an community leaders by phone

visit and do more interviews - assess congestion, natural surroundings the vibrancy of town centers and sense of community

all data 2005

I think they would have had to pick one town in LI...that in itself would be hard! And I think LI is eliminated b/c only a few places are over 50K in population

that's why they typically refer to an area around here as Nassau/Suffolk. I don't know of anywhere else in the country that has towns as small as on LI. there are so many municipalities (another contribution to the high taxes here!)

Hmm... I was looking at house prices in Columbus the other day out of curiousity (my company has offices there) and you can get a REALLY NICE house for 150K! Maybe we should move there...
